Went to the Blade Show today. I saw the Buck area and meet this nice man who seemed to know a lot about Bucks. I glanced at his name: CJ Buck. Holy Cow, he should know a lot about Bucks. He showed me some nice new (to me) Bucks. My favorite was the 119 Special stacked leather with bands of white bone. Very nice, Mr. Buck also said he liked that knife. The 300's with jigged buffalo were better in person, than on paper. CJ Buck was excited about the folding Kalinga Pro, the Kalinga Pro, the 532 Bucklock Guitar and the Gen 5th skinner. Wow, I have a lot of stuff I want to buy this year. CJ Buck carried a well worn and used 172 Buck/Mayo TNT, at least I think that is what it was.

I was so excited about the new knives that I later meet Bruce Dollinger with the Buck Collectors Club, I signed up and became a member. I am member #1644. I thought I might go to the meeting tomorrow and see if I can figure out what knives I can buy this year.

Buck is still selling some great knives.

Bruce did mention something about buying some knives during the meeting, some 500's with stag. I wasn't quite sure what he was talking about. Well, now that I know, I will bring $$$$$. Thanks for the tip.

Well, I saw your post before I went to bed, so I took my camera.

Let me first say, it was a pretty informal meeting with a lot of good folks. I think this is Larry Oden in the beginning of the meeting.

Here is that nice man, who knows a lot about Buck. Sorry for the bad photo, but this is the only one of CJ Buck, so I included it. To my surpirse, the first thing he talked about was about the lay offs. I know there is a lot of talk in other threads about this. To me, he seemed upset about what happened. He talked about the slow down and the projection for the next year is worse. He did it to remain profitable, but was obivious to me that it was something he didn't want to do. I am sure no one wants to lay off employees. Since this is just my second day as a member, I will leave the discussion to everyone else, but looking at the price of milk and gas, I would think buying a Buck knife may take a back seat with many people.

He also talked about the meeting in Posts Falls.

This is the first part of the silent auction. They had some bids on some neat things. I saw a 124 made by Joe Houser that was absolutely wonderful, but I was out bid.

Here are the knives that were for sale. The ones with paper in front were for the silent auction. The four knvies with paper at the end of the table, are for bidding, I bid on one of them. The other 3 knives had armadilla shell on them, very interesting.

I won a bid on the bottom knife. A 500, the middle knife is a David Yellowhorse that I bought in 96, to show a knife that was close to it. The upper knife, I bought in the show.

Here is the other side, showing the new knife has two sides with wonderful scales. The knife's first bid was $90 and I consider myself lucky to of got it.

I hope these pictures help.

Thanks for the photos and the shots of the great looking knives!
And congatulations on your great acquisitions.

These are some of the very few photos we've seen from the show.

CJ Buck is a heck of a gentleman and runs a great company.
It's been around since 1902 as I guess you know and I'm sure he's doing every thing he possibly can to be fair to everyone and continue in business long into the future making great knives. The company's response to us here on BF about the Custom Shoppe was nothing less than extraordinary.

Welcome to the 'fold', Peter! I am sure that you will enjoy being a member of the BCCI. Thanks for the pictures.

... I glanced at his name: CJ Buck. Holy Cow....
I always thought his title was "CEO".
He is one of the Holy men from that mountain Decaf Dave faces and prays to each sunrise and sunset.
But a "Hold Cow"? Maybe he's planning a trip to India.

LOL, I crack myself up...:D

:D:D:DThat is pretty good. No he is not planning on changing his religion, he started the meeting with a good "Christian" prayer. My first thought really was holy sh--, but I edited my personal thoughts to "holy cow".

Hi Peter,

Looks like you've been having a good time at the show. Thanks for the photo's; I've never been to a true knife show...or a BCCI meeting ether. Nice score on those new Bucks ;)

That silent auction is a lot of fun. The first time I went (1998) I didn't have any money. I had just gotten a divorce. The second time (2005), I had a pocket full of money and spent it all plus a little. This caused my second divorce...o.k. so I'm just kidding about the second divorce. I hoping to make it next year.

I have question about the 500. It is the knife at the bottom of the picture. When I bought it, the paper said it was a 500. Well, I thought it meant the 500 group. I knew it was not a 532 and it might be the 501. When I got home my 501 was much smaller. I looked a the catalog and saw a 500 under the limited edition section. A Texas knife. I measured my knife to the specs and it matched. The Texas 500 only had one bolster while mine has two.

How long has the 500 been out? I realize now, I have never seen a 500 before. Did they at one time make a regular 500? Anyone have a 500, it is about 4 1/4" long folded?

If I had known it was not the 501 when I bought it, I would of got the other one with armadillo shell on it.

Make what next year? The divorce or the show?

:D

Hi peter,

I love the Buck "Duke" 500 model. It's about the same size as the 112; but, a little easer on the pocket with the rounded edges. Larry Oden put an article in the last (March 08) BCCI news letter on the Duke 500. His article said the 500 was introduced it 1978. The 500 is now discontinued....except for limited editions and special order knives. I collect 500 LE's and have a few of them...the one you just got is sweet and was a nice score:thumbup:

Thanks, I remembered trying to buy a Duke in 96 or so from SMKW and they were out. I got a packet when I joined the club on Friday and they had some old news letters. I looked at the March news letter and could not find the article. Larry Oden wrote about rare Bucks, then I realized I was reading the March 2007 news letter. I then looked at the March 2008 news letter and there it was "Put Up Some Dukes" by Larry Oden. It was a great read.

I agree with you, I really love the 500. I will keep a look out for more. I really like all the 500's and it is weird that I missed this one. Thanks again for the info.
