I was thinking, (yeah I know that's dangerous) about knife maintance when I ordered a knife and recived a tuf-cloth with it.

What lubricants, rust inhibotirs, sharpening methods, or anything, does everybody use?

Perhaps we may discover some new things and tidbits of knife care wisdom.

cleaning: for lint and such, I just blow it out-- no shortage of hot air here :D for more significant filth, I use hot water and dish detergent, followed by WD-40 to displace any stray water.

lubrication: Tri-Flow

blade protection: tuf-cloth

sharpening: Sharpmaker

tightening and loosening: a set or torx drivers, the brand of which I can't remember at the moment.

I'm extremely happy with the results of TufGlide, in addition to the TufCloth.

You can take Emerson knives apart without voiding the warranty, I'm sure you know that. So what I do on my emerson knives is every 4-5 months I take the knife all the way apart, clean everything off with warm water and wipe it down with a rag or paper towel, then coat every metal with tuf-cloth, lightly oil just the spacers. Before putting everything back together I put a very small amount of loc-tite on every screw, then I put everything together, adjust the lock to my liking, and tighten it down. I usually do this at night so I can let the loc-tite sit overnight.

Then there are knives whose warranties disappear when you dismantle them. I just blow them out with some compressed air every once in a while, and put a drop of lube on the spacers, then wipe the blade with tuf-cloth. I also do this every 2-4 weeks on the knives I disassemble. For sharpening I used to use a lansky, but now I just use benchstones.

the knives i REALLY carry and use i wash under hot water and scrub w/an old tooth brush w/some dishwashing detergent (brand unimpportant) and then blow dry them w/compressed air, then lightly oil the metal parts, and oil the pivot pin(on folders of couse) i use mobil 1 synthetic oil in a spray can, it works for me - i get some of mine real sweaty from biking, running, etc so i feel the need to wash them every now and then.........
