As many people take off for a long weekend of barbecue, beer and play, I just want to take a moment to remember all those who have served, those for whom the holiday exists. Many people will never give a thought to what the holiday is really for, and many others, sadly, don’t even know.

I’d like to take some time to remember some real American Idols — those who gave up all their tomorrows so we can have ours. I want to thank, in my simple way, all those who fought to give us the freedoms we enjoy today; the ones who paid the price so that we can have our barbecues in peace.

I want to say thanks to the men I served with, especially those who didn’t make it back, and thank all those who are still sacrificing for us today no matter where they are. Thanks, too, to all who served before me, and those who will protect our country in the future. I remember you today, and every day, and I’ll never forget.

Happy Memorial Day.

Note: If the moderators want to move this, that’s fine. I just didn’t know where to put it, and I hang out here on W&SS most of the time, so here it is.

P.S. Yes, I did post a very similar thing last year. I haven’t forgotten, nor will I.

Long weekends, loads of barbecue & beer and the freedom to play, NONE of which we would be able to enjoy without those who fought, bled, and died for out freedoms, rights and privileges.

To all our vets and service members on and off these boards, thank you!
You are appreciated and you will never be forgotten.

good night's sleep and an early rise for me, weather and motivation permitting I'll be plodding a big 30 mile round trip in the foothills fueled on canned hash, hot dogs, baked beans and beef and barley stew. I gotta get to the treeline before the sun comes up or I'll get baked and my water will disappear before I actually need it...

Put yourself on that list Bob, A list of those who at remembers that this is NOT a holiday to gorge ourselves on the things that half the world would die for. I went over to Walmart to pick up a few things for the cemetery, Unbelievable the carts full of food and beer heading out the door.

Now people earned it they worked for it and they deserve this time with family and friends.

However I want tho thank a guy named Milt from (who nows where) MT. who wounded, and with a pack of scum bags on our tail, Made it to the river to and and " Said Get that boat going and don't look back"

To those who stormed beaches and flew airplanes until they ran out of gas and knew that only luck would get them home. We have all heard the stories and in this land of plenty can forget that those were real people with real names and real families at home.

Maybe most of all to that newest bunch that didn't even have to go. SALUTE Guys and Gals!!!!!!!!

And you're on the list, too, Jim. If I remember correctly, we slithered through some of the same mud over there, although I worked North of you somewhat.

I don't begrudge anyone their barbecues and good times, by any means. I hope everyone has fun this Memorial Day. I just hope they stop and remember why they get the holiday, and what it means.

It means a little more to folks like you and me, I suppose, because it's about the people we served with. I've never yet made it through a Memorial Day without my face leaking water all over the place, and I hope I never do. I lost some good men, and I remember every single one of them right now.

I've been spending far more time than I would like at the VA hospital recently, and seeing all those men and women just tears my heart out.

Hell, I'm getting maudlin, and my face is leaking again.

Amen.

To those who served and gave all, those who served and toed the line, to those who serve today--many thanks!

Too few know, too few have given; but for those who do and have, we should be grateful. Happy Memorial day!

Brother Vets,
We who served and came home will always honor and remember our brothers who never made it back. Let not their sacrifice be in vain.

My heart goes out to those that paid the ultimate price and their families. It's because of you that I can enjoy my life in the manner I do. Thank you to my fellow servicemen that are no longer with us.

a day to think on all the male members of my family before me, none of whom are no longer with us, but served in the various services. they did their part well.

i attempted to join up out of high school, but thanks to selective service, they actually "were full" and had no more "jobs"... "try again next year son". well, by then, other fates had me.

so, i'm probably the last generation of my family line, but a long line of service for them all.

for all those others not related to me, and who served, we do remember, and thank you.

Amen to all of the above posters. We take far too much for granted in this country, far too much. My kids turned 10 this year, and we're going to some Memorial Day ceremonies. In my home town they used to pick a kid from 8th grade who would memorize and recite "In Flanders Fields" in the local cemetery. I think my kids and I will read it on Monday as well.

Thanks for the reminder. I had to do the "ramp ceremony" for a young trooper last fall in Afghanistan who had his life taken away much too early. As you toast all those Veterans who so rightly and fully deserve our thanks as we honor their service, don't forget those still in harms way.
