I spent the morning reading a special section from the local newspaper (where I work), the AJC in Atlanta- on the 26 members of Georgia National Guard's 48th Brigade that have died during their one year service in Iraq.
"Husbands, Grandsons, Sons, Friends, Co-workers, brothers and soldiers"
Across a large span of ages, 19-45. Everyday occupations, grocery store meat cutter, plant workers, insurance salesman, jailer, student, hardware sales, etc. Many of them were in their mid-30's, like me. what a thought.
It feels like a heavy day today, not the typical day off of work.
I'll do my part to remember the Veterans today. And thank you all, who have served.

David, I really dis-like doing this but there is no other way to contact you. Please check in on the "blade show 06" thread. Can you make dinner on sat.?

Most Memorial days in recent years have regained the significance they have slowly lost over time.

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the hills, from the lake,
From the sky.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.

Go to sleep, peaceful sleep,
May the soldier or sailor,
God keep.
On the land or the deep,
Safe in sleep.

Love, good night, Must thou go,
When the day, And the night
Need thee so?
All is well. Speedeth all
To their rest.

Fades the light; And afar
Goeth day, And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well; Day has gone,
Night is on.

Thanks and praise, For our days,
'Neath the sun, Neath the stars,
'Neath the sky,
As we go, This we know,
God is nigh.

Be well and safe.

By Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

____

Remembering today all those who have fought and gave their lives for our freedom.

With thanks, Mike

Lost some good friends during my time in uniform, but I can close my eyes and see their faces, listen close, and hear their voices. Memorial Day? That was yesterday, and the day before that, and the day before that, and the day. . . . . . . . . .you get the picture. They've gone on ahead, but they haven't, and won't, be forgotten, this day or any other.

Don't know what to say, Sarge, I've nothing to add to that or the fine posts here.

Well said! Thanks for a great post.

There is always a spot on my heart that is on the ground for our vets past present and future.
I had uncles who gave some and at least one gave all.:(
They will never be forgotten as long as I'm living.

When I was a Boy Scout we spent Memorial Day putting out flags, and cleaning up vets graves. Yesterday I spent some time telling Hannah of her family's contributions, and honoring the service of our boys throughout our history. Then, as Americans, we did some swimming and grilling. We had a great day all thanks to those sacrifices the day comemorates.
