Memories?

I started wondering the other day after finding some old knife magazines about the nature of the knife industry; what knives were now "hot" and what were the "hot" items of the past. No doubt the Internet and Bladeforums.com has made a significant impact upon the knife buying public. We are no longer dependent on magazine reviews, advertisements, and displayes at shows.

My question is: What knives do BF members remember as being the "hot", "had to own one" items of 5, 10, and even 20 years ago?

Say about 15-20 yrs ago Al Mar's were very popular they were some of the better quality knives back then. Pacific Cutlery stuff like the Fer-De-Lance. Gerber's various Mark 1 etc knives.Back then they were what is now considered tactical. Also the Gerber bolt action was unique but did'nt have a thumbstud. Also this was the time of that horrible hollow handled knife craze. Butterfly's were abundant but auto's were scarce. And I would have to say also that the 110 and it's copies were hot items. This is all I can remember off the top of my head. Good thread though for old timers, makes you really aware of how the industry has progessed.

If by "Hot" you mean "Trendy" that's really not my style, I go more for the Classics (in knives as well as music and movies) and that's because I'm old.

If your looking for something that has stood the test of time and is still popular I would say Bowie knives, in many different shapes and styles, your Buck 110 with over 10 million sold is still going strong, and Bob Loveless' drop point hunter will be forever "hot".

What's trendy now and will be a classic one day? If someone mentions Sebenza, I sure wouldn't argue with that.

"Will work 4 Knives!"

And, of course, there are "the knives I should have bought". Includes the Benchmade Delta Raider and the Gerber Parabellum.
I am sure I will think of several more as the day wears on. Like all those customs by makers I can no longer afford.

If I am a figment of your imagination, stop it..PLEASE

I can remember laying many a blade across my knuckles because of no locking mechanism. It seems that the hottest one (to me) was a Gerber Bolt-action and a Schrade liner lock. (still have them both)

Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way!

Some years ago, I lusted after a Gerber Parabellum. Never got one though. Too bad...

I remember that all thru the 70's, the Buck 110 was the ruler of the roost, as were all of the Buck line, here in my neck of the woods. I was born and raised in Florida (Thank You, GOD)!
Most fixed blades I saw were Buck 119 Specials or Buck's smaller FB offerings. Case pocket knives were also a big thing, as were Schrade's knives.

It's really only the last decade or so where the cutlery industry has just exploded thanks, I believe, to Spyderco and their ugly, hole-in-the-blade folders with the uglier, but oh-so-practical, pocket clip. Back in the mid to late 80's, I got introduced to this type of folder by a fellow street skater friend of mine. (When skating in certain areas of Tampa, having a quick to deploy means of self defense was an absolute must have thing). The total package of hole and clip was just sooo practical, you just had to say, "Why didn't I think of that"?!
After that, the 110 and any other "traditional" type folders went into the drawer and have not seen the light of day since.
This also rekindled my love for knives,(I was into guns back then) which in turn has turned me into the stark raving cutlery-crazy fool that I am today.
I blame Spyderco! Thanks Sal!
