Ok, so i sat down the other day, reviewing my BOBs and various bags trying to see what i have missing. Now granted, we usually make these bags for minor emergencies, ie cuts, scraps, need to start a fire, gather food/water etc... and we hope its only for a day or so. We also joke about catastrophic issues, invasion by the Zombie hordes and various undead rising and destroying mankind.... we are the last on the plant and so on. Then it struck me, God forbid this bag is really for a major crisis. No one can promise no world war, or a idiot hitting the button, major virus etc... (do i stress about it? no, not at all, should i have a little prep? maybe:D)

So its hit us, a major world changing event. We grab our bag, we survive a few days, very little human contact or such and we reach in our bag for.... (wait for it, wait for it) A BOOK????? Yes, a book. For me it turned out to be the Bible, and no its not just religion. Seriously, for God forbid sanity need. For me its my people's history book, its a book that describes other's adversities and their overcoming it, its a good choice for teaching my kids if that is the need for living you life and etc... its something to READ.

So does anyone have a favorite small book that they might throw into their real BOB and i dont mean a small maxpedition Jumbo pack that barely holds your Glock and a bandaid. It need not be the Bible, but i think we often over look our mental survival (when equipping our BOB bags) and need for civilization contact as a race. In the case of a world calamity a book might be one of the few things to keep us in touch with that???? what are your thoughts....

the koran

no actually i have a dog eared copy of dune
it has everything
knife culture
survival
kickn ass
um.... spice

and books make for great fire starting
just make sure you read the first chapter before you put it in the bag

besides the bible, which would be on my list, a copy of the "Pocket Reference" would be invaluable.

Good choices, did not even think of the Harmonica. Small, space saving and cheap enough to put in each BOB.

Dune, huh. Nice. I may throw in World War Z:thumbup:

Bible. In fact next month there will be a whole bible out in waterproof format and I plan to pick one up. That way I wont have to keep it in an aloksak.

I've got a mini-pack of cards in mine right now.

Bible is a good idea, I'll add one as soon as i can figure out where i put my small one.

For a fiction book that I can read more or less any time and get some relaxation out of it would probably be something from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series.

I was going to say, don't forget pen and paper too for journaling. You know, something they can find with your remains. :D
I'd forget mini cards and go with full size. There's a certain satisfaction in shuffling them. The little ones will drive you insane.

I had a buddy send me an issue Bible and Battlefield Prayers book from the sandbox. They're a nice size, in desert ACU and Amazon has them.

way to go.. man you nailed it, the Bible.. That's what is missing for sure!!!

You didn't just watch 'the book of Eli' did you...:D

Good thread.....

Crayon - just in case I need to write a book on zombie killing whist killing zombies... ;)

nice thread!

being something of an Agnostic, i'd need the Bible, The Koran, The Torah and the Tibetan Book Of Living And Dieing if i was going down the path of religious texts.

my still-being-filled B.O.B already contains a deck of cards and a mini chess set.

i'd want my laptop with several large volumes of reference texts on it (and a solar panel :P)

I keep small copies of the New Testament and Book of Mormon handy. Of course, now that I'm thinking about it I might want an Old Testament also. Genesis 37-50 is one of the all time great making-the-best-of-a-bad-situation accounts. (Well, not so much chapter 38, but the rest)

Your brain may be too busy to read a book !
Yesterday I was told about an adventure that a fellow I know had. He had been in the bush with a guide in Africa .Then the guide disappeared !! A perfect opportunity for lions, leopards and hyenas ! Carrying only a panga and matches he survived the dark by making and maintaining a good fire . He found his way back safely - a minimal BOB -a knife , matches, and a functioning brain !!
