Mentioning other forums on BF?

I have a question about mentioning or linking to other forums on BF.... When is it okay, and when not? The situation I'm specifically thinking of is when folks come in asking about Bark River knives. BRKT's web site is pretty badly out of date, but they have a strong presence on KnifeForums, including a list of stocking dealers, a post showing what's currently in production, etc. Is it verboten to link to other forums if there is good information on that forum that can't be found on BF?

Thanks!

If you post for the sole purpose of advertising a website that is spam even if it isn't a for-profit website. Lamers are always doing that; they run around the forums pasting in ads for their new knife forum or myspace page or whatever.

We don't like trolls trying to start cross-forum flame wars either (this other forum really sux, Bladeforums is better than they are). You don't have to pick one you like best and diss the others, you can go to them all (if you can find the time).

As long as you're not spamming or trolling, links to other websites are fine and we couldn't do much without them.

Like Coug says. Information is Good.

General stuff and links in sig lines and "come join this new forum" is nothing more than advertising on the backs of people who support this place.

I have all my Address, phone number, and also have my email which is a link I guess, in my sig line. I assume this has not "crossed the line" but just to make sure....has it?

That's fine, Paul. Some people who are not paying members (and can't have a sig) paste an ad into every post, and some people spam meaningless posts all over the place just as an excuse to show their sig. Then there are the people who try to get away with an enormous banner ad, and the people whose sigs blink and jiggle at you.... You're probably thinking you never see any of that at Bladeforums -- and you're right, you don't! That's because the moderators are on the job!

Thanks guys, very reasonable. I didn't think it would be a problem, but I have seen enough people posting things like "...on another KnifeForum *wink wink* you can find this...." that I wanted to make sure I wouldn't cross any lines by just posting a link. :)

Different websites have different rules. There's one forum I go to where if you put a url (any url) in your post or use the word "ebay" your whole post will be deleted a few minutes after posting. They get so much spam that's what they have to do.... So some people get the habit of using euphemisms and hints and spelling "ebay" different ways.
