Please take some time today, Menton Day, to remember the men of the First Special Service Force.
"Menton Day commemorates the inactivation of the combined U.S. and Canadian First Special Service Force in Menton France on December 5th, 1944. The unit was commonly referred to as the "Devils Brigade" during its service in WWII. The brigade was one of the first Special Forces units activated and is credited with a distinguished record of unconventional operations behind enemy lines."
The unit never had an official motto during the war, but I think that the message on their "calling cards" that they left in German positions - Das Dicke Ende Kommt Noch (the worst is yet to come) - makes a fitting replacement.
While their mission was more Commando than Special Forces, we take our SF Regiment lineage directly through the FSSF. As a matter of fact, the two main elements of our Distinctive Unit Insignia, the Crossed Arrows and the V-42 Stilletto, both come from the FSSF.
These were hard men, and I'm proud to be one of their "descendents".
And so, I say: To the men of the First Special Service Force... Let's Drink!
