I have an old Mentor that I bought back in the mid nineties. I am wondering if anyone can tell me anything about the tang. How solid is it. Also, will the handle start to deteriorate to the point where it becomes dangerous? And lastly, is the Diamondback designed as a replacement for the Mentor? The Mentor seems to be hard to get these days and I am wondering if it is being phased out. Its the first decent knife I ever bought, so it has nostalgic value.

Thanks, Neophyte.

the Mentor is one piece. There should be no problem with the knife at all. The handle is made to last. If you ever develope a problem with it you should send it in for repair. I noticed are a long way off, so shipping would put a kink in your. sorry.

Thanks Guy, I knew the steel was quite good but wasn't sure how much effort they'd put into the tang. The handle hasn't given me any problems yet, but if it does I may even have a knifemaker here in Adelaide do something with it for me.

Regards, Neophyte.

I forgot to answer part two of your question. Yes, the Diamondback is a direct replacement to the Mentor. The DB is a contract knife made in Taiwan. I've got both Mentors and both Diamondbacks. For me the Mentors hold a slightly better edge, but only enough that a knife nut would notice. The smaller versions would make great first fixed blade knives for young hunters or campers.
take care
