menuki placement

On small blades, does one place a menuki on both sides, traditionally? If they are only on one side, I assume they are on the side of the knot, which is usually the omote, or side facing facing out.

If they are on both sides, are they generally not aligned due to the staggering of the wraps?

The Menuki are placed staggered, to act as a palm swell, they should be located where your hands are. For a short one handed blade then you would only have one menuki on the corresponding side of the left or right hand the blade will be in. I think.......
 
I should elaborate: It's a 3" blade with a ~3.6" handle. I'm making this one for myself, so it fits "my" right hand quite comfortably.
