I run into this knife accidentally in the store and picked it up.Was surprised by fit, finish and how solid the knife feels in hand.Havent used it, how does this knife performs, and what steel is the blade made of..all info welcome thanx!

My Mercator is not stainless and I left it wet once. I had to brush, clean and oil pretty hard to get the rust off.
But it is still a monster knife for it's money, rugged and well-made.

I have both, stainless & carbon! Both hold a great edge,I ferfer the carbon.....seems to hold a better edge. I was at a gun show & saw an old one in a WW2 Germany War Display.

I forgot to add - I used the K55K as a hard use knife on the building lot. It cut conctrete bags, insulation and opened beer bottles when needed. I didn´t baby it. And it still is as new in its new home.

Oh and the slipjoint Mercator is almost in Croatia with a forum member here. :)

Just plain awesome knives!!!

Highly recommended in general!

Great pic Andi, and a classic knife. Do you have a link to the slipjoint version?

Here is a Mercator I tried very hard to kill. I had installed a pin as a blade stop and it was slightly off. I needed to do some sharpening to reprofile a bit and finish the job.

So I used it as hard as I could at work and it kind of turned into a test to see what it would take to kill it. I finally, after a couple years, hit it wrong on the spine with a mallet and bent the backspring. Took it apart, bent it back, and "MY CREATURE IS STILL ALIVE!"

I had been beating on the spine all along, I just held it wrong that time.

Officer, this is the first knife I've ever abused. She was asking for it really. I'll seek counseling.

I've heard there are a few maker of the Mercator knife. Is this true? If so is there a quality issue between them? I've wanted to add one or two of these to my collection for a while but just haven't actually had one in hand yet.

Well, there have been several cutleries that made the Mercator knife, at least in the past. Nowadays there is only Otter Messer, Solingen left that is making that great pattern. I think that Löwen Messer (Bertram) has made them until some years ago...
