Today, after a “bushcraft pasta” dinner (a popular Italian meal, it’s pasta from yesterday plus shacked eggs, all is cooked briefly = it’s called “frittata di maccheroni” – poor, but so delicious)

I want to try my Mercator, here whit my SAK Ranger for comparison

Under a blu sky…

…let’s try the knife. First, a tent peng

Then, a guy runner

It works very well whit the previous tent peg

Finally, a trap (don’t know the name, my way :-)

The knife in hand

I like this knife because of his history and the nice shape. Cutting efficiency of the blade it’s not the best I experienced, and above all due to the thin handle, after 1 hour working, I had two hot spots

Ciao,
Alfredo

Hi Alfredo!

Thank you for your review of this traditional german knife pattern :)

I made also something like a review some time age, but just as the knife at its own - noting in real work. Thanks for this :)

Mine has now found a good home in Croatia.

Kind regards
Andi

Nice pictures and review. The handle is not the most ergonomic, as one might guess. Thanks for confirming this. This is a classic knife, though.

Pressed metal usually cannot make comfortable handle, nevertheless my palms are bit rough so it doesn't affect me so much,Andy sent black version(non locking)thought I didn't use the knife to much, tin profile, reasonable good carbon steel, makes nice EDC, and it is traditional ;-)

Thanks so much for this.

I only use the Mercator for light work, I have is no problems. But you show it is at least capable of hard tasks.

I attached a pocket clip and thumb stud so I can now use it one handed.

This is a great knife.

Alfredo, I love your reviews and photos, and I'm curious about two things. 1. What are shacked eggs, and how do you make that dish, it looks good. 2. Where in Italy are you as I'm curious about the mountains in the distance?

I had a Mercator when I was a kid, they were for sale in large numbers here after the war. I remember the thin handle being not as comfortable as my scout knife, which is why I traded it off. They did cut very well and carried flat in the pocket though. I'll give them that. Never saw a red one before.

Carl.

I enjoyed the review. I wasn't aware that the Mercator folders were available in red. I've just seen the old school black ones but I find the red to be a more becoming color.

Very nice, I've been looking to get Mercator but alas, not avail yet... Someday. That is very interesting the rope runner you had made. I ways taught in Finnish army to do 3 to 4 loops nots to attach tent as it would give rigidness abgainst win but also would allow rope to "live" with rain and such things. Than kyou for sharing!

I now have a Red Cat. Thank you Andi!
I must say that this classic folder is overlooked. I love it!
Pic soon!

Another great review

I take my Mercator with me on all our Scout trips, either in a cargo pocket or in my bag with my Opinel and RR Scout. It's funny, but the inexpensive Opinel and Mercator usually get more comments from people than do my GEC's, Case and Queen/S&M knives.
