My grandmother recently passed away, and I inherited(it was stored in the basement, no one else wanted it) 2 plastic squeeze bottles containing Triple Distilled Mercury (once used in dental work) each bottle weighs about 470 grams or 1 pound.

I really don't want to use it(for amalgam gold plating) due to the toxicity, and it was suggested that I sell it. I suppose my question is: Can anyone suggest whom I might approach to sell?
Also, is it legal to own or sell?

Thanks for any help

You are faced with an unusual problem...Hard to say what I would do in your case,,,,I dont even know if its legal to own that stuff...

I'm not sure where you could even get rid of it...and,,,Im not sure who you could ask, and if you did ask them,,,would you get in trouble?..

best of luck.

But My advice is,,,,find a way to unburden yourself from it as best you can, as fast as you can,,,as safe as you can....

If I remember right when I used to check out the metal prices in the paper. You would see silver so much per ounce, gold so much per ounce, and mecury so much per flask. It's been a few years but contact a metals buyer or searh on the internet as what you have might be worth some money!

Check this thread out:

Price cited was $180 per 76 pound flask. (Who invents these units, anyways?) Based on that price, I'd say that you have less than $5 worth of the stuff.

Personally, I'd call my local toxic waste disposal. Hopefully they won't refer you to the EPA.

Brian, if you still have the mercury, I will take it off your hands. I live in Hamilton and would/could pick it up on the weekend.

It is perfectly legal to own. I would suggest maybe donating it to your local high schools science lab.
