Merino wool base layer, which?

Hey guys. I need a base layer for temps down to 40F. I’ll be wearing a hoodie over it for additional warmth. I’m looking for fall Turkey hunting (archery). Doesn’t need to be camo, just warm. I’m not interested in wearing a jacket as it’ll be too thick and restrictive. I thought about under armour but merino wool seems popular.

Or go to your local thrift shop and pick up a Brooks Brothers (or other brand) merino wool pullover. I've never paid more than $5.

There are lots of things that would work, even a couple of long sleeve tshirts. Depending on your budget you can consider light fleece. Fleece and especially wool have the advantage over cotton in that if they get wet they still insulate.

I have some Duofold medium weight merino wool from years ago. It's very good stuff, but it appears that their quality has really dropped off recently. If I had to buy something new, I'd go with Smartwool.

If you can find any Ibex shirts, go for it.
Great quality stuff that lasts forever.

I have two different makes, but I use them for hiking not stalking and hunting, so different activity level.
HH Lifa Merino.
And Woolpower 200.
I have a 200 weight Woolpower but given my activity level I've been good down to about -20c (windchill). They do a midweight 400 and a heavy weight 600. Not cheap here in the UK but then nothing is.

I am a city mailman. I am outside from 8 am - 5pm most days. Here in St. Louis it gets COLD in the winter. I don’t t like to be bulked up and restricted either. I bought a wool “hoodie” (it’s actually a base layer type thing) made by Marmot. It has the thumb hole sleeves too. Pretty much all winter I wear a regular t shirt, the Marmot base layer, and my summer short sleeve postal shirt over the top. It is very soft inside with excellent moisture wicking.
Granted I am moving constantly. It is better than any of my cold weather tree stand cold gear.
If you need to know- I wear Under Armor Cold Gear 2.0 bottoms if it’s under 20 degrees.
