anyone tried these hiking shoes yet? they're pretty lightweight but not waterproof so it'll be a spring/summer only hiking shoes for me.

i really like my merrell phaser peak so i might just buy another pair to stash away if the proterra's soles are too thin for rocky terrain. i don't really have anything else to spend my rei dividend on...either shoes or probably the suunto mc-2g compass that mckrob recommended.

My wife just picked up a pair of the low tops; she loves them. She’s taking them on a short 7-8 mile hike tomorrow and will do a review on her blog (I’ll link to it from here).

I am really considering on getting a pair. Just debating between the mid or lows. I’ve been running in Merrell barefoot shoes and I’m able to wear a pair of Belleville minimalist boots for work. My ankle strength has significantly improved and I’m pretty confident I can get by with the low cut Proterras. I’m no longer concerned about shoes being waterproof. These types of shoes dry quite fast, and with the thinner wool socks, I can a couple extra pair to rotate. Heck, I even did an 8 mile hike in my barefoot runners with no socks and although my feet were a little fatigued I had zero issues. I can get a Mil discount, so I may be taking advantage pretty soon...

thanks! rei decided for me since both the proterra and phaser peak were out of stock in my size so i ended up spending my dividend on a suunto mc-2g:

Can't go wrong with that compass...it's my primary when doing land-nav:thumbup:

Well, I had a rock roll my ankle this weekend; just a bad sprain but swelling is down and I'll try a light run in the morning. I was wearing some Merrell Chameleons which I do like for scrambling and lighter day hikes, but I was packing about 32-33 pounds when I went down. I still think my ankle strength is better than it's ever been and this is the first sprain I've had in a few years.

My wife talked me into getting the high-top Proterras for our AT trip later this spring. I'll try and get a review after a couple short trips we have planned this month. These aren't "barefoot", but are considered minimalist. I've done 8-10 mile hikes with 30-40 pound packs with just barefoot shoes. No issues at all, but I will admit my feet were very fatigued when we finished. A little more support will help with multi-day hikes with the lightweight packs...

Nice compass Jay, Brian Andrews sold me on them a while back. I've been carrying one for a couple of years now, and I love it.

Just picked up a pair of Merrell...something-or-others (not recalling the "model" name) at Stockdale's today based on all of the good input I've seen here on the forums. They feel great, I hope that last a while.
