Merrell Shoes

durable, with excellent traction. not a bad value, either. the wife loves hers (she has 2 pair)

for strictly hiking, I suggest the breatheable ones (as opposed to the waterproof ones) - my feet heat up very quickly in my waterproof (non-breathable) hikers.

that said, they're the perfect everyday winter footwear - again, the traction is perfect, they're waterproof and (esp with wool socks) they are very warm.

g'luck.

I have a pair of the moab ventilator trainers. I flipping love 'em. very comfortable (for me) and seem to be holding up well to more or less daily use, although the soles are starting to wear down a bit now (after about a year, year and a half)

obviously your expeirience of the comfort may vary depending on your feet.

I've used merrell outdoor shoes since 2001. They work real great! Sole is stiff enough to be comfy when walking over rough terrain. It is indeed grippy. My only complaint was that the three pairs i've had up until the present all had their soles come off when exposed to muddier conditions

I had a pair and used them about 3 years, everyday on all sorts of trails. They held up great and the only wear point was the back of the inner shoe, where it made contact with my heel.

Thanks for the input. I found a couple pair from onlineshoes.com for $68.00. They sell everywhere else for $20-$30 more. I will get both.

I LOVE Merrell shoes!! They are THE most comfortable for me. I I own many pairs of Merrell's.

+1 They are the only outdoor shoes I will buy. Fit my feet perfectly. I like the older styles better though. The newer ones are a little too bright for my tastes.

I asked about the same exact topic some months back over at W&SS. Those folks there have considerably more outdoors time than me and they really like the brand.

I just did a 14 mile plus hike to the top of Telescope Peak in Death Valley at 11,049 feet last weekend with my Merrells. They are great boots, no complaints. They are my second pair of Merrells, I still have my first pair which I bought at REI way back in maybe 1983?

+1 on the ventilators!

Another vote for the Moab Ventilators. I had an older pair of Merrels that held up well, but were too flat and stiff in the sole. In fact they held up TOO well -- it took a long time to wear them out so I could get a new pair.

When I went to REI to get some new shoes, I tried on a number of other brands, but liked the look/fit of the Ventilators the best. They were also about $25 cheaper than comparable shoes, which was nice.

Now that I've had mine for about a year, and worn them almost daily, they're starting to flatten out a bit. I still like them, and wear them daily.

I've done quite a bit of hiking in the Ventilators, and with some good Smart Wool or similar socks, they're excellent. The grip is good, they fit well around my feet, and work well for uphill, downhill, and flat terrain.

I've had a pair of Merrells for the last four years. From hiking to yard work they've handled it all well. Seem very sturdy and fairly comfortable.

I'm pleased you guys love your Merrells. Over the past 10 years, I, my fiance, my father, and my grandfather have all various problems with them on more then one occasion - they seem to just fall apart! We've all had a few different pairs and none of them seem to have lasted.

Not sure what we're doing differently, I guess they're just not for everybody :)
