Back in the day, Merrell had another lighter, softer boot that used a Littleway (hidden) welt. Sometimes, lighter is better.
Regarding the original Wilderness, it was radically light for its time owing to the use of a foam rubber midsole.
The mid sole was/is prone to splitting, which then leads to the stitching to fail on both sides at the toe bend. Happened to mine and found out from the cobbler who did warranty work for Merrell at the time this was common thing. The repair was to have the boot rebuilt with more traditional (heavier, stiffer) leather midsoles. Once rebuilt, my Wilderness lasted through several subsequent resoles.
It's a very comfortable boot.
If I had to replace my Fabiano Rias (they replaced my Wilderness) I would be looking at the Limmer Standard (non-custom).
