Well, I went out and picked up the Case 62032 STJ this morning, and I got a pretty fine specimen, mfg. in October of this year. Thanks to all of you who helped me pick it out! I like it a lot so far.

I could tell, as soon as I saw it through the glass, that I wasn't going to buy the one in the display case, as the backspring was very proud with the clip blade open. (Talk about thumb blisters!) The guy grumbled a bit when I asked if they had any more in stock, but he'll get over it. The spring on mine is still just a little bit proud with the clip open, but not nearly as bad, maybe 1/64", if that. Pen spring is flush.

I really like the pile side scale.

F&F is really pretty good. Very little backspring space,

good blade centering (pen touches liner, but is more centered than it appears),

and very nice W&T. A nice hard snap on both blades.

I really like the stout pen blade. The shape of it seems just right. The edges aren't too bad, a rough burr on both, as expected, but the bevel behind it looks okay. They will have an audience with His Royal Highness, King Waterstone, later today. 😉

Now that she's had her photo op, she's ready to ride in my pocket and cut bait, or whatever.

Thanks again to everyone for your help deciding! I'm really glad I had the chance to pick it out in person. Definitely worth a few extra $$ vs. ordering one on the Interwebz. Can't wait to start using it!

Forgot to mention, the inside is also very clean. None of the oft despised Case gunk on this one.

Check out this thread 'Cult of the Texas Jack; why should the peaNUTS get all the glory'

I think we may have a new member.

Alright, another member of the "T.J. CULT" - you can check out, but you can never leave! OH

You made a great choice on the Texas Jack. It is a great pattern to use and collect:thumbup:

Update: I would love to get my hands on the monkey at the Case factory who sharpened this thing. I got out my combination waterstone this afternoon with the intention of just deburring and putting on a 20 dps microbevel. As I soon discovered, however, the mark side of the clip blade was ground at almost exactly 15*, but the pile side was well over 20*. I pondered on the situation for about 30 seconds, and then grabbed my 15* wedge, leaned in, and started reprofiling. It took most of the evening off and on, but the clip blade's factory edge has now been replaced with a 15 dps bevel on both sides, with a 20 dps microbevel. It is S-H-A-R-P!!! I'm really looking forward to using the CV. I still haven't had a chance to mess with the pen blade, but I'll get to that soon. And yes, I flushed it and oiled it before I put it away. 😁

Congrats on your new baby! That Amber bone is one of my favorites. I love my Case knives and they see lots of carry.

Good thing the grind is thin, and the steel easy to work with, so not very difficult to fix. My latest peanut was much worse, had the edge bevel not just on different angles, but towards the tip the edge was misaligned, as the bevel turned into a chisel kind of edge.
A few hours, and all good though, but hey..not cool.

Yeah, I know it could have been much worse, unfortunately.

To begin with, I seriously doubt that your knife was sharpened by a Monkey. I also doubt that it was sharpened by a human being. I expect it was sharpened on some automated edge grinding machine. Keep in mind that you purchased an inexpensive, mass produced and mass marketed product. Produced by the 10's of thousands on automated machinery.

I understand that it is a lower price production knife. I don't consider $55 to be inexpensive though, and Case touts itself for having quality products made in America. Yet, they are well known for some of the poorest factory edges in their price range. I expected it to be rough, but more than 5 dps difference is unacceptable, ESPECIALLY on automated machinery. I could have bought another Buck 301 for less money, and it would have come symmetrically ground and razor sharp, with no burr.

I like the knife, and I knew going in that I would have to correct the edge to some degree, but Case can, and should, do better.

If you spent $55 on a Case Sodbuster, you need to find a different vendor. The going online price is less than $25.

No! Not a Sodbuster. A Small Texas Jack CV in Amber Bone. It's available online in the low $40 range, but then I couldn't have picked it out, either.
