Merry xmas to me! I got a messed up Cyclone! Grrrr....

Ok, so after a great deal of debating and reading many, many awesome reviews, I decided that my first entry into the "real knife" world would be the Kershaw Cyclone. I had my wife order me one for christmas - perfect timing, it arrived yesterday afternoon. I couldn't wait for the morning to come so that I could fondle and play with it, but I got quite a shock after using the speedsafe a mere two times:

The thing just won't friggin work with assisted opening turned on. Yes, I know how to properly handle it and turn it on/off, but with the speedsafe turned on, I get a very loud, resounding CLICK when I try to shut the blade. It sounds as though the torsion bar is getting to about 80%, then slipping off of the blade (or whatever it rides on, I'm not 100% familiar with the innards of the knife yet). It's done this three times, and I'm afraid to do any more for fear of really messing it up.

There are no issues if I use it with the assist feature turned off...but I bought the damn knife primarily for the assist feature! :mad:

It was made in July of 06 according to the blade, which annoyed me in and of itself...I bought a new knife, so shouldn't I get one that was manufactured a little more recently than a year and a half ago? Eh, I'm about to shoot a nasty e-mail to the retailer who I bought it from...but first, does anyone know how to fix the problem I'm describing? Is this a common issue with the Cyclones?

My recommendation is to send it to Kershaw for a tune up. Turn around might be a little slow right now, due to the holiday, but the issue will be resolved. As for the 06 BOD that is a little annoying, but, there should likely be no difference in an older one and a newer one. There have been no noteworthy changes to my knowlege.
 
What a bummer. :( But once the problem is fixed, you will love the knife. :)

As for the date of manufacture, Tim Galyean informed me that this knife blade has been 13Cr26 from the get go.

Merry Christmas to you too, guys. We got a White Christmas here in CO for the first time in a long time!

I was afraid that the only remedy would be to send it back to Kershaw...but man, what a bunch of bullhockey. I shouldn't have to get a supposedly brand new knife tuned up! I'm going to see what the retailer has to say about it...perhaps they will do an exchange and pay for shipping. If they are a stand up company, they'd do that. I guess we'll see.

I would mail it to Kershaw , they will turn it around quicker than your retailer, unless you bought it local, but it doesn't sound like you did. Just ship it to ths address on the paperwork that came with it Attn: customer service, they will probably turn it around same day with a new one. The torsion bar probably just wasn't completely seated and slipped out of the slot, I had a new blur the other day that did that and I was able to fix it. It is an awesome knife and you will enjoy it, I feel your pain for having to wait longer.

It's actually a pretty simple fix -Kershaw has a new set of bars (Torsion and actuator) that they can send to you if you want to fix it yourself. Probably the toughest part of the dissassebly process is finding the really small Torx bits - Lowe's has a driver tool that covers 8 very small sizes of torx with 4 double ended bits for something like $5 or $6 -if you don't want to bother with this send it back to Kershaw - they have a new actautor bar minus the cut out which appears to completly and permantly cure this problem. If you have a 1630 ( full sized Cy) - I have new parts left over that I would be glad to send you if you want to do the job yourself - just e-mail me your name/address.
I know this is very disapointing - also very atypical of a Kershaw/Onion design - problem has been delt with by the parts change.

Or call Kershaw and ask them to send you their keyring set of Torx bits. Could cost you $8, could cost you time to make the phone call.

So far I'm very impressed with Kershaw's customer service.
 
Well, a little update and perhaps a new dilemma. After playing with the knife a little, it seems to have improved; it works about half of the time (as opposed to not at all - I'd say a 50% improvement is good). I'm thinking that maybe the parts just needed to wear in a bit? Regardless, Audiopile has put a new set of parts in the mail for me, which I intend to install as soon as they arrive.

My new issue now is the fact that the aluminum scale that houses the torsion bar appears to have been damaged internally. There is a small bump in the surface of the aluminum right where the torsion and actuator bars appear to meet. I made the mistake of taking the knife to work with me and showing it around. Several of my coworkers played around with it, with speedsafe both on and off. I'm guessing that all of the repeated snapping of the bars inside the grip has caused the bump. I was afraid that would happen.

Do any of you think that it might cause problems with the new set of bars? It looks like a trip to Kershaw might be inevitable at this point...I'll have to see how the inside of the knife looks once I get it apart.
 
Stop screwing around and go ahead and send the Cyclone back to Kershaw, with a detailed note of what's wrong. They will either fix it, or more likely, replace it with a new one.

Do it NOW.
