My buddy gave me this grill/mess kit, it is labeled "Boy Scout of America Mess Kit - Upton Machine Co." It consists of an aluminum case that is roughly 9" x 4" x 2", with a small grill (7" x 7') that has 4 metal posts that go into the ground, a small pan and detachable handle. The whole thing weighs a little over a pound. My son and I tried it out tonight and we liked it. You could put a whole PSK or cooking/fire kit in the case, and it fits nicely into the pocket of a pack..

That's a really cool little thing: I like it! Use some Naval Jelly to take the rust off, and it's a user. You could carry tinder and a firesteel right inside. Nice kit.

Yeah, that's the way I was looking at it too. There is a lot of spare room there.

cool kit  the rust would worry me a little though.

It is kinda cool, I'm hoping that someone might post a more complete version of one, I'll bet there was utensils in it to at one time. Does need to be cleaned up a little, but that's a quick job...

That looks like it would make a decent little kit once it is cleaned up. I don't like rust on anything... makes it less "use friendly" I suppose?

I don't know about using naval jelly on something I might eat off, I'm sure the rust would come off. You might try soaking the kit in Coke for awhile. Some of the old boyscout stuff is very neat. I suppose the short piece is the cup. I have two old boyscout lean to that are cool, face them together and you have a short wall tent. I have the only two I ever saw or came across. I have an old scout mess kit, heavy, steel fry pan, very old and the other day I was gifted with an old hatchet for a project. I have never see such a set up before. Great gift. Congrats.

I used some steel wool on the interior of the cooking pan and took the surface rust off, but I might try some Scotch Brite to clean it up the rest of the way, I've never tried it before. I'll post a pic when I get all the components cleaned up. You guys are right, a lot of the old BSA stuff is great. My son and I are planning a camping trip (just us boys!), we'll take a couple pieces of scout gear with us...

Thats a nice kit, but you might want to get a tetnus shot if you are going to use it...
