As most everybody knows we almost never charge for anything until you have it in your hand and are happy with it. We are sad to say this will not be the case with blades only. The reason is a finished khukuri is much easier to sell than a rusty looking unfinished blade. If you don't like the khukuri we send chances are we can sell it to someone else. Not so with blade only.

So, when you send payment for the blade only I'll place the order.

Khukuri FAQ

:
That's a good idea Bro.
Having hammered out a few in my time I know just how butt ugly a forged blade can be before anything is done to it.

I know we have a lot of talent here on the forum, But You Cannot Stress Enough For People To Be Very Careful _NOT To OVERHEAT_ these Blades on a grinder when finishing them.

Some of us could probably retemper them, but why make extra work for yourself?
It's kinda like the copper penny trick that Cougar told us about to remove rust from valuable blades.

Take your time and reflect on good times and thoughts of the kamis and how they worked this piece of steel to begin with.

Khukuri FAQ

Yvsa, that's exactly why I had to do it. Selling a shiny finished khukuri as a complete rig is one thing. Trying to sell a rusty piece of ugly steel is quite another.

I just hope everybody who ordered knows what they are getting. An ugly rusty piece of steel that looks sort of like a khukuri.

O.K. Uncle. Sounds good. When I get the cash together, I'll send it in for those blades. I'm still in the proces of acquiring my equipment for blade making. When this is complete, I'll give you a buzz and order the blades. Thanks again!

Sounds good, I'll have to send you an MO. I'm planning to finish this with hand tools, partly because that's all I've got. I know I won't ruin the temper with files and sandpaper. This is going to be a fun project though, I can't wait for it to come in. Do you think these "kit khukuris" will become a regular offering or a special order basis only? I ask because I'd like to get a few more blades, like a UBE and 12" AK, but I can't afford them all at once right now.

If this initial order goes well I see no reason why we can't offer blades only on a permanent basis.

RR, you have a tremendous amount of work ahead of you if you are going to do everything by hand. I hope you understand what a large project you have cut out for yourself.

Khukuri FAQ

If you're going to use a power tool try it on a piece of junk steel first and see how little pressure it takes to overheat and discolor the steel. You'll probably be surprised -- better to be surprised with a piece of scrap.

If your machine has more than one speed try the lowest speed. If it doesn't and it's pulley driven you might consider getting step pulleys for it. I built my lap with two 4-step pulleys facing opposite directions and I keep the belt loose enough so I can slip the pulley between steps -- just tight enough so it doesn't slip as I'm grinding. Step pulleys are cheap and you can get them at a hardware store.

I have a pretty good idea of how much work there will be involved. I just put a new handle on a different khuk I bought from GH and it took quite a bit of work, especially since I don't have a vise or a drill press. I know it's going to be a long project, but I'm in no hurry. This way I know that I won't go too far with anything, so I'll have material left to correct any mistakes.
