I've been out of the running since middle December due to our router going on the blink and only being replaced THIS MORNING! Can you believe it! (The router allows access to e-mail and internet.)

YVSA, that's why I've been quiet, but I tried to contact you at the time of the initial router troubles. My e-mail address is unchanged.

JOHN, you may think you did me a small favour sending me that magazine, but to me it's a BIG favour and I have been reading that magazine to shreds, so to speak. If I could have known the router would be inoperable for so long, I would have sent you a thank you note by big bird over the big water. I'll get to you by e-mail very soon now.

Didn't get a new khuk, but I did get an original Martini-Henry. You gurkiebuffs know what a Martini-Henry is? Stay well, guys!:D :D :D

Do WE know what a Martini-Henry is???

I had to read that twice to make sure I was reading it correctly.

Martini-Henry, a large caliber weapon that the British used to good effect during the Zulu wars.

I believe origionally chambered for the .45 Martini-Henry...correct me if I am wrong, I am a little rusty on my world history.

I believe it was also used during the Boer War - British side. The Boers (Oom Paul's folks) generally used a somewhat larger caliber rifle; some of them could be loosely called elephant guns.

and the platform for loads of british hunting rifles, including some target grade .22s.

Welcome back, Johan!

Johan good to hear from you. I figured that you must be having more e-mail problems as I wrote you a couple of times and it bounced the same as before.
I knew you would be around when you got free.:)
Drop me an e-mail whenever. I will get back to you in a day or two anyway.:)

I think I caught some of you unawares. You thought I thought you didn't know what a Martini-Henry was! I knew you knew! And even modest Uncle knows I know he's just bluffing.

Yep, you've all got it on the nail. Good to be back! I'd love to talk with you on the subject of my (drool) beautiful MH, but the moderator would throw me out on my butt.

However, JimF, where you wrote: "The Boers (Oom Paul's folks) generally used a somewhat larger caliber rifle; some of them could be loosely called elephant guns", the statement is not 100% correct. It is known that besides the MH, the Boers (I am a Boer descendant) used 7 X 57 Mausers and a few Krags. Yes, EARLIER in SA's history the Boers (then called Voortrekkers) used "elephant guns" (flintlocks, of which I have a superb original specimen, and percussion rifles); but, barring possible isolated exceptions, not in the Anglo Boer War.

Thanks, Yvsa!

When I went on holiday in December, I took ONE of my khuks along to show my married family. Guess which one I chose (it was very difficult): the engraved presentation SN1/BAS. They were, of course, VERY impressed, 'cause khuks are new to them. :D :D

I'd like to have an elephant gun but since we don't have many elephants in Reno I wonder how it would work on squirrels?

An elephant gun on squirrels....hmmm....you could take the canopy of a tree off with the blast alone. Personally, I think it would be 'overkill' but as they say "to each his own".:p ;) :D

I think that would work! The blast would also skin the skull and cook it.

The problem would be finding the head in the next time zone before the brains spoiled.:(
