Hello fellow knife enthusiast,
I recently purchased a fixed blade with no scales so I could wrap it samurai style. I did an underwrapping and burnt the end of the paracord so it wouldn’t come undone and I realized i got black residue on the handle, although it came off I’m worried I messed up the heat treat. I used a bic lighter and if it matters the blade steel is s45vn that has been double deep cryo’d and has a tungsten dlc coating. I also poured boiling water on it after to shrink the paracord wrap I hope the water also didn’t mess up the treatment.

Not likely. You'd need to get it hot enough to turn the steel blue in order to alter the temper. And if it's just the tang area it probably wouldn't matter anyway.

If you have to do that again next time keep the blade in water and only the part you want to apply heat to out of the water, see who say's you can't lean anything from watching Forged in Fire 😂😂😂

It will keel… for next time I have to wrap paracord haha thanks

Changing the temper doesn't generally go in a direction to make the steel more brittle. Softer yes, but I can pretty much guarantee you didn't get it hot enough to do that with a bic lighter. And the tang you generally want fairly soft anyway.

I also used a blow dryer for the paracord that made the knife kinda hot to touch, I could withstand it however it was a little bit hot I hope that didn’t effect it as well. Thank you guys for all your help

To change the temper it would be so hot that if you put it in you hand it would be like that guy out of raiders of the lost ark with the medallion/coin imprint burnt on his hand at the beginning of the film! ;)
