Hey guys so i just got my benchmade 62 in the mail was extremly excited and it was near razor sharp but silly me thought i could make it sharper i used a stone and oil but quickly realised i didnt know what i was doing and dulled the blade a little so i asked my dad to try and he dulled it alot more not knowing what he was doing this knife is really expensive and im afraid i just ruined it entirely :/ i was considering taking it to someone but 1 butterfly knives are illegal where I live and 2 idk if id trust someone else not to mess it up im really in a bind here guys any tips for what i could do to make it razor sharp again? Btw it is d2 tool steel if that matters

I'd recommend buying some cheap knives and practicing sharpening with them. If you look around, you can find Opinels, Moras, and Svords for pretty cheap and they are great for learning how to sharpen on. There are also plenty of videos on youtube with tutorials on stone sharpening. Just gotta practice and get better at sharpening.

you could remove the blade from the handles and take it to a knife-sharpening place like a restaurant supply store
or you could send it to benchmade and have them resharpen it
or you could practice sharpening on cheap knives and then once you learned how to do it right, which takes practice, try again on the 62

You have a few options here....

1: buy a sharpening system and do it yourself, IE, Sharpmaker, Edge Pro, Lansky. The learning curve on these is very forgiving

2: Walk into a place that sharpens and sells knives, tell them your problem and your concerns and see if you feel comfortable enough to have them do it (tell them you only want the edge "touched up" and you want the absolute least amount of material taken off

3: Have someone here on the forum clean it up for you.... There are some very talented "Edge Creators" here.... I believe they can clean up your 62 nicely

You can try looking on youtube to see if you can get any sharpening videos but I wouldn't advise it because you could end up making it way worse than it is but since it's a butterfly knife and you're probably going to be flipping it around it might actually be better that it's dull.

Had to fix that, have a headache and that really hurts, (BTW in not hungover, only had a small snifter of cognac last night at midnight).

The OP's original post sent me into an epileptic trance. I don't normally type like that, but thanks for fixing it.

As has been said send it to Benchmade and they will cheerfully resharpen it for you.

Better yet: Learn to sharpen it yourself...HOW? you ask...EASY...google search "how to sharpen a knife" and you will waste...er um...spend valuable hour after hour watching every sum b.... in the world show you how to sharpen a knife to a molecule slicing edge.

Understand this...you did not "ruin" anything. You merely dulled the edge on the knife...no different than spending the day in the woods cutting wood, etc. or hard use at work, etc. Edges all dull with use or misuse hehehe.

As has been suggested buy yourself an inexpensive knife...especially if you can find one with a blade shape similar to yours...and use that for practice until you get a good edge and feel comfortable...skill and competency comes with practice and learning...

Good luck and keep us informed

Unfortunately that's how my brain usually sees things, all lumped together so I take in more info at a shot, comes from reading lots of tech manuals trying to sift through all the engineer speak to find what I'm looking for. :)

I thought ya gave some good advice.

I may be mistaken, but I don't think butterfly knives are supposed to be really sharp. If I'm wrong, I'll suggest buying a Sharpmaker, Lansky, DMT Aligner, etc. and sharpening it yourself.

Balisongs are knives just like any other, and should be sharp if you want to use them. That's why they make trainers, so you can practice tricks without ruining the edge of a nice knife.

Short term solution: Send it to Richard J.
Long term: Since you have no problem dropping 3 bills on a knife go ahead and spend a little on a quality sharpening system and learn how to do it yourself. If you can spend the time to learn how to flip without losing fingers then you have the time to learn how to sharpen. It is a skill that will help you greatly in the long run.
