Messing Around in the Woods Today

I have a small 5 acre parcel about 20 miles north of where I live. I've been thinking about camping there. It's quiet, wooded, and mine. Why not? I can't do any real camping for a few more weeks, so I figured I'd spend a few hours out there testing out my new hammock, and looking for fatwood.

Enjoy.

Warbonnet Blackbird SL 1.7 hammock, hung with the strap/carabiner suspension, and two stakes to stretch out the noseeum netting.

Getting into the hammock.

My feet in the footbox, which allows a pretty flat lay.

trying to show the shelf that is built into the upper right inside. It's pretty huge, maybe 1.5'x1.5'.

I'm still using my Snow Peak tarp, which isn't quite long enough, so I ran it asym and it covers the hammock.

The simplicity of the strap/carabiner suspension. You can also see I ran my tarp line to the carabiner too.

More of the Snow Peak tarp ran asym.

Some shots showing the tarp and hammock blending in pretty well. I was surprised at how well the tarp blended in with the hard, angular shapes and all. These pics were taken about 30' away.

I harvested this core of Long-Leaf Pine fatwood, and started this little fire just to test it out.

The tarp and noseeum netting folded back to convert the hammock into a hammock-chair, which was very nice with a gentle breeze and rocking.

Nap Time. The hammock was very comfortable for the time I was in it.

20 acres? NICE!!!!

more ink pics if you dont mind1

No, only 5.:( I wish it was 20; hell, I wish it was enough that I could not hear anything but woods sounds.

Let me see if I have some pics in the 'putor of the tattoos.

The tarp did seem to cover as well as a Hennessey does. I'll use it until I can get an OES MacCat spinnaker tarp.

The fatwood, which is in abundance on my property, is not the reddish/pinkish color that I've seen other people find here in W&SS. I wasn't sure how it was going to light, but it does smell like turpintine, and did light just fine.

This is the first time I've seen it in person, and it was cool to search for it and find so much.

Nice setup, dude. Very nice, indeed. 5 acres is more than enough room to escape sillyvisation.

What the heck? I posted more and I'm not seeing it. Here's the rest:

Looking up into the trees. When I was a kid, we had a lot of oak trees in our back yard, and I used to lay in the hammock for hours just watching the goings on in the tree tops.

When I got home, I messed around with some fire materials; fatwood, jute, plain cotton balls, and pj cotton balls.

Here's what I found:

Fatwood, plain cotton balls, and pj cotton balls light very easy with a match. Jute, by itself doesn't.

With the ferro rod, it took about 10 strikes to light the fatwood alone. About 3-4 strikes to light a small pile of shredded fatwood with shredded jute. The same for shredded fatwood and shredded plain cotton balls, and the same for shredded fatwood and shredded pj cotton balls.

what is that blue thing over the trees and that bright light i see?

:D

bushy, drowning in rain in BC :p

doritos!?!?!?!

That's a great hammock rig, mine is definitely a bit lower budget, but I can see where I might have to upgrade next year. (and teach my son hammock camping with my old one. excuses!)

Good pics!! That definitly more roomy than the system I'm using..almost like having a tent up off the ground. like the no skeeters mesh too.

Looks great but that caribiner would scare me. I was taught if they don't have a screw lock on the gate they are not meant for holding weight, but that's been so long ago the technology may well have changed since then. Have you checked those to see what the weight limit is? It would sure make for a bad night to have one of those give out on you.
