Messing around making gifts

Everyone in my family feels like they should get something made from wood as Christmas gifts.
So I started a bit earlier than last year.
These were made to be a light duty cutting board / serving platter.
I made the smaller one yesterday and took it home to see what my wife thought of it.
She liked it but thought it should be a little wider and that I should use a fancier piece of wood. The smaller one is about 8" wide by about 20" long.
So today I made one a bit larger. About 10" wide and 24" long. Used fancier wood too. Now I will take them both home and see what she thinks of the larger fancier version. She gives me an objective opinion and tends to notice things that I might overlook.

I am curious to hear what you all think of these. Any input is welcomed.
It is doubtful I will be making these to sell. With the time I am putting into them they would be pretty expensive.

Gorgeous wood and finish, they will make great serving boards and beautiful Christmas gifts. Great job!

They look great. you have a lucky family. I think I like the looks of the smaller one myself.

They look awesome. But you're going to cringe the first time an in-law puts a hot saucepan on one :)

Consider offering one for sale if you have an extra - people like that sort of thing and will pay for it (although postage would be a killer for me ;) )

I took these 2 home to show my wife.
Now she is trying to get me to make one for each family member.
They are actually an easy project and the sanding time is kind of relaxing at the end of the day.

I am keeping the finish food safe by using food grade mineral oil followed by board butter (a mix of beeswax and mineral oil).
I am going to try wet sanding with the mineral oil with a fancier piece of wood.

You have some really cool woods there where you live.
Some good Curly Tasmanian Blackwood or some Lace Sheoak would be really nice.

I like both, but the figure on the large one is really nice. I'd be tempted to cut it up and make scales out of it. :p

My wife is also objective about things I make. It's a very good quality.

Any idea how they'd wear? I'm wanting a cutting board for my wife, but I've been advised that end grain is best. Doubt it'd be as pretty.
