Anne and I just returned from Hutchinson Kansas, birthplace of a dear friend. We also renewed our acquaintance with his Tamang wife.
Steve Brothers is in my opinion one of the top people in the world as far as Nepalese, Tibetan and Naga culture. He is married to Nisha (Sabina Tamang). Nisha told us that all of the Tamang people have 'Tamang' as their last name.
Her grandmother is a practicing Shaman. Grandmother begins her day of healing and other shamanic duties early and has lines of people forming up as early as 5 AM needing her help.
We took our spaiels and they made a great hit with Steve and his family. Nisha told us that 'Chumuley' means a very fragerant flower that looks like a small lotus. One flower's scent can fill an entire house.
Anne and I saw some absolutely incredible artifacts, a few weapons, but mostly shamanic articles, masks, shaman kits, phurbas from these three cultures. I am continually amazed at how much time and effort these people put into their more common items as well as the shamanic articles.
Butter churns, buckets, Tibetan beer canteens, are intricately carved. BTW do you know there is no such thing as Yak milk or Yak butter? Yaks are male. Dri are the females, so get ready for some Dri (dree) milk!
We were surrounded by the articles and the smells of Nepal, Nagaland and the exiled Tibet. Besides the patinas that can only come with time and useage, there is an incredible aroma coming from accumulated ages of incense smoke, campfires and Dri butter.
Among the articles we acquired is a wonderful architectural piece from a community Naga longhouse. It is a representation of a leopard about six feet long. A real prize. These are VERY rare.
Also go a few pieces of Naga jewelry. Headhunting pieces that only men who had taken heads were allowed to wear. Will be posting pictures when our shipments arrive.
Steve and Nisha usually spend two or three months in the summer, here in the USA. They will be returning to Kathmandu in mid-September.
If anyone has a real interest in these cultures, please PM me and I would love to converse.
Will be posting pictures of our goodies in a week or so when they arrive.
