the mighty izula was hungry so...

it only took aaron and myself 3 months of chopping but the izula did get the job done :D

unlike so many celebrities this one doesn't need an airbrush to look pretty.

i think we brought enough cutting tools  i left my becker necker, izula, bk-2, rc-3, rc-5, & lite machete in the truck. i just had to see what all the fuzz is about all this ultra light hiking bs :D

...more.

the mushrooms! there were a ton of 'em and i have no idea which ones are edible so we left them alone. aaron did find some wild berries and against his advice i quickly munched on a few of them. a few minutes later i complained of stomach aches/slight dizziness. sorry, bro it was a bad joke :D

i trusted tonym when he said all segmented berries are edible. he was right since i'm still here  i'll keep trying and see if i find an exception to that rule

this one doesn't have white spots. the red cover in some parts just got taken off or munched on, appearing white.

these were huge.

what a strange mushroom! i vaguely remember eating tons of these when i was a kid but can't remember when/where

aaron - nice to meet you, bro. we gotta hike again soon. hopefully the other nj/ny crew...cough...rescueriley...cough...gonadz...will join us next time. neither of us turned out to be serial killers. whew :D

Great pics man! I personally think ultra-liting is over rated but d@mn bro...I'd hate to have to hump your pack if you ever got injured on a non-ultra-lite day

I love the last line it's hilarious but I do have to wonder about the mental disposition of a man, in possession of a Junglas, who chooses to use the Izula to chop...whittle...gouge...whatever...his way through a 5 inch log. :D

.

Awesome, was great meeting you too. My saw is the crappy one you can get at Dick's Sporting Goods, though I forget the name. The next one is a Leatherman Charge AL. I don't think we brought enough knives though....next time we'll be prepared. Photos are great btw.

thanks, bro. haha, i was just kidding. my usual hiking knives are the esee-4 & junglas only. if i go off-trail then i'll bring the lite machete. i brought most of my knives along that day so aaron can pick which ones he's interested in checking out.

that izula is a sneaky one! it waited for the bk-9 & junglas to do all the work and then swoop in at the end for the photoshoot & credit :D we did build a camp fire when it was 85 deg f :p disturbing...very disturbing indeed!

next time i'll cut down on water! holy moly 100 oz bladder and 40 oz bottle is freaking heavy. normally my pack without water is only 10 lbs or so. i keep forgetting it's a lot colder once in the woods compared to the parking lot/city.

Hey I know that spot,... Nice Pics, Sorry I couldn;t make it.

next time, bro.

Didn't even catch this the first time through lol. Good to know neither of us are serial killers.

I was just giving you a hard time bro. I've got no room to talk lately. The last three outings I've been do photography for 3 websites, a blog, and some of my other work, plus studies in edge geometries. The last time I hit the woods with three tomahawks, half a dozen knives, 6 different ferro based fire starters, my photo equipment, and my personal gear.

I know that feeling too. Everytime I incorporate fire starting into a knife review here when it's 96 degrees with a heat index of 105 this little voice in my head keeps asking "why the h#ll are you doing this?".

Well...good to see you've got your priorities straight :)

I know the feeling. That last trip I filled up my guyot with ice and water then got hung up talking to a friend in a parking lot for twenty minutes. I went back in with my canteens and dumped them and filled them up with ice and water too. After the four hours I was up there I still only drank the guyot and a few sips of one canteen.

.

I thin water is one of those things I rather have way too much of than anything else. As long as you have water, you will survive. Admittedly we were going for a quick hike and not a month long adventure, but you never know. I did finish the 1.5L of water I brought, though I was thinking about bringing the nalgene I have.

On a side note, I wish I could camp out for a week or two and just mess around with knives and bushcraft stuff.

JV3- Im a few hours from harriman, I usually get up to the Adirondacks once a week or so, Sometimes the Cats, usually around Windham+northern catskills.
headed up to Grafton lakes State park as we speak. Should be fun to wander around for a day.

yeah, next time i'm putting quite a bit of ice in the bladder. carrying all that water weight made me work harder and sipping on warm water almost made me even more thirsty! i need to bring my golden retriever along so i can let him carry the water for me :D

i was carrying 4 liters of water on top of the almost half a liter i chugged on the way there  i promise if we get lost and i start running out of water i'll eat the mushrooms so i'll die quickly so you won't have to carry me back to the parking lot :p
