I was looking at my Brownells catalog this morning...at the metal checking files on page 247. Decided to call them and order the 25 lpi file - for $27.30

When I did, the sales lady told me they were $39.97.

- "Woah...I thought they were $27.30"

"What catalog do you have?"

- "No. 57, 2004-2005"

"Well, the new catalog came out now and prices have gone up...."

- "What about the 20 lpi file for $33.04?"

"Now it's $52.44"

What gives? A nearly $20 increase for the exact same file? Am I crazy for being just a bit miffed about it?

Where else can I find some metal checkering files, or have they all gone up in price..... :(

Steel prices are continuing to climb, much of that due to China ,which is buying 25% of the world's supply of steel !!!

Between all the steel and gasoline they are buying, that is going to be one HELL of a robot!

We should build a battlebot and compete with them. That is how all wars should be fought from now on.

I think it's actually a good trade off. We get Wal-Mart's full of junky products that Americans can collect, but they're cheap so why not, and they get steel and gasoline. Heck of a deal.

I bought a checkering file from Sheffield's while at the Knifemaker's Guild show. I'm pretty sure I paid $29 for it.

 but it's just a file , the labor in making the file should not have gone up that much,,the steel in the file can't be $3.00 their cost,,,
price gouging I'd say...
car prices are coming down,, they must be made with more plastic ;)

I think they saw you guys coming. They know that knife makers are all making double what they did last year. :p

Hmmm... How hard can it be to make a file?

<sigh> I know.... Oh well.

Rob!

I bought 3 checkering files from Texas Knifemaker's Supply last week:

24.95 for the 20 and 30 lpi
26.95 for the 40 lpi.

(I bought the 20 lpi first, checked Brownells prices that night and went back the next day and bought the other two!)

Did you know you can get your checkering files sharpened? I heard of this place from Jerry Hossom IIRC: http://www.boggstool.com/. I have their 2000 price list and sharpening a 6" checkering swiss is $5.00. They sharpen all kinds of files, end mills, reamers, countersinks, drills, taps, burrs, etc. and sell new ones, too. You could save a lot of money on files by resharpening them instead of buying new ones, or get old used files for cheap from eBay and have them resharpened.
