My brother in law works at a local factory and yesterday he gave me a 10 foot bandsaw blade 1" wide and 1/16" thick, he said they had a bunch of old blades and if I wanted more just to let him know and I could have them all. Anyone know what most metal bandsaw blades are made from, I told him to find out who the manufacture was and I would give them a call for the steel specs, but I was just curious. It seems like I heard at one time bandsaw blades were 1095, but I know most saw mill bandsaw blades are 15n20 or L-6. Anyone know??

Thanks,

Bill

You could do a lot of guessing and the teeth may be one steel and the rest of the blade something else. The body could be L6. Heat treat some and see what it's like.

My understanding is that it's normally L-6. I've been using bandsaw steel in most of my damascus lately. Just got some 15N20 from Kelly since I seem to have heard it's easier to weld than bandsaw steel.

thanks guys, I'll wait and try to get a hold of the manufacturer, I don't like guess work anymore. J the saw mill bandsaw blades I've had access to were 15n20, this is what the manufacturer told us, but these suckers are 12" wide and almost 1/8" thick.

Thanks,

Bill

I'd be in hog heaven if I found a source for the saw mill band saws Bill.

I might even give up 5160 for those! :D

I hear you can get a lab analysis for less than $40.00. I seem to remember seeing a thread about it over at ptacticalmachinist.com. Actually I think it might even have been $25.00.

Prepare to be in heaven. I know where there are some of the huge ones Don or at least I know where a fellow is that knows of some. Head down rt 58 towards Suffolk and take the new bypass that crosses 58. Go like you are heading to rt 13 towards Ahoskie. Once you get off the new rd there is a long stretch of straight rd heading out of Suffolk. On the left side of the rd there is an antique sales place that you cant miss. The guys usually has a wooden stand with about 50 or 60 cast iron skillets hanging up. Id say its maybe two miles after you get off the bypass.
I had stopped in and asked the guy if he knew of any large sawmill blades. I was looking for shear steel. But he knew of someone who had some of the huge bandsaw blades.

Peter the problem with the big sawmill blades is you have to get it sheared, I've cut some with a skilsaw and metal blade but that takes quite a bit of time. Sawmill blades are hard and several places won't shear it because its to hard on the shearing blades, believe I know, then some that will shear it want as much to shear it as I could buy new, clean 15n20 from Kelly Cupples already sheared to the sizes I want. But these smaller bandsaw blades that my brother in law is giving me are already 1" so no shearing is needed, just a little cleaning up before adding to a billet and there good to go. I think most of the time this recycleing steel costs you more in the long run, but it is nice to have around.
