Hi,

This might be a silly question...
Well, this IS a silly question, but... Can the Metal detector, like the ones in banks, detects titanium ?

The reason for this question is that I want to know if a knife with titaniun (or aluminium) handle can be detected...

I know this detectors are calibrated for the amount of metal, but I want to enter the bank with my sebenza and I think, only the metal on the blade, plus my belt buckle and can't trigger the alarm...

Any opinions ?

Regards,

Andre Tiba - Brazil

Ps... Feel free to ignore this thread... ;)

My understaind is that it all depends upon the detector.

Some will signal with any solid object, including plastic and non-conductor metals. Others will detect only larger metal objects.

The MD where I work has ajustable sensitivity. Sometimes when I walk through it, it goes off. At other times I go through it and it doesn't even though I'm carrying the same stuff. The MD here would detect a knife blade if it's set for it. A belt buckle will set it off. In that case guards use a wand to find where the metal is.

I think counting on your Sebie passing through undetected would be risky.

Exactly. Most of the detectors being used today will detect Ti and Al quite easily.

X-Rays might be able to see the density and shape of ceramic knives, in case you might be going that material. Otherwise, metal detectors won't see them if they don't have any metal in them.

I wouldn't risk carrying a knife into a bank, especially a Sebenza. Walking into a federal building with a "weapon" is considered a felony. Besides, what would you want do in a bank with a knife?

PDX caught a fiberglass knife in a carry-on bag just the other day. The stupid carrier forgot: carry fiberglass knife through metal detector, not x-ray.

The x-ray machines being used at airports these days are remarkably sophisticated. They even have software that looks for the shapes of common prohibited items.

And coming soon to an airport near you: radar scanners instead of x-ray machines. These devices can image just about any object concealed under your clothing  and even see things implanted inside your body. They're about a year out from beta testing.

Just like in Total Recall :D

Got some cites for that. I've seen people in and going into a couple of different Federal Government buildings all the time with knives. I'm not talking about the Post Offices either.

The poster is in Brazil anyway.

What? You can't go into a bank without passing through a metal detector? Hell, I've been using the drive in too long — I didn't know that!

Andre lives in Brazil, most ( 99%) of the banks here require customers to pass thru a one person revolving door with a metal detector that reads while the person is trapped. 2 to 3 armed guards monitor the door and people passing thru. They will lock down the door lock electronically if the detector alarms or if for some reason an individual arouses suspicion. You are also required to open day packs, purses, and bags for inspection. Some banks will not allow you to carry a bag in without a detailed inspection.
Armored car heists and bank robberys are a common crime here and the gangs that specialize in these crimes can be very violent.

I go into the bank all the time with my knife and don't even give it a thought at all. Now that I think about it, I've carried a gun also when taking money out of account. Since they have made me fill out a form stating that they aren't responsible if anything happens to me or my money, I'll take a BAZOOKA in if I feel like it. If they Don't like it I'll take my business elsewhere.
