i walked threw a metal detector today with my 770 osborne in my pocket on accident and it did not set off the metal detector. i dint realize i had the knife till later but was the detector on the fritz or does the 770 osborne have to little metal in it to be picked up?

I need to go throgh metal detectors are work all the time. Any of my Benchmades nor spyderco's ever get picked up.

It depends on the quality of the metal detector. When I had jury duty a small alcohol swab in my pocket set off the detector. The one they had was sensitive to detect even a small piece of aluminum foil. Lots of people were stopped for things like gum wrappers.

Maybe the detector was set to only go off if it detects a certain mass of metal. The amount of metal in your knife would be comparable to a metal belt buckle, where a hand gun would contain more metal.

I think most metal detectors are set up to only go off when a gun or large fixed bladed knife goes through.

About a year ago I went on a trip that took me through Philadelphia, DC, and New York. I walked through so many metal detectors that I just left the knife in the hotel room and kept my keys in my jacket pocket. This way I could just put my jacket on the conveyor belt and walk through. The shoes that I was wearing were work boots and had little metal rivets. About 70% of the time just the little rivets would set off the alarms. I think you are all very right about the metal detectors being able to be adjusted and they just don't screw around in the historic or other nationally important places!
