Ok, this is not practical tactical thread about sneaking knives through airport metal detectors:p

I would like to know if there are any treasure hunters/beach combers frequenting the forums that could enlighten me about metal detectors. My mom doesn't know what to get her fiance for Christmas, and she thinks that a metal detector might be kind of fun for him. They live out on some property that used to be very old farm land. They have found barb wire and even an axe head lodged into a tree. She seems to think that he would get a kick out of hunting around for old odds and ends out in the field and woods.

Any information on brands and what to look for in a detector would be appreciated. I have no idea what she wants to spend. This is more of a fact finding mission for me to report back to her.

Thanks so much!

Hey Jake,
Metal detecting can be loads of fun. I've doing it for about 6 years or so and I've really had some good times from California to England. I use a Minelab Explorer 2, a top of the line unit that can set you back some bucks, I don't recommend it for the beginner as it has quite a learning curve. I've heard the Garrett Treasure ace 250 is a good unit to start with., check it out. Jeff Kinzli has a great forum http://forums.kinzlicoils.com your Pop can get good advice there.

Thanks so much! That was just the info i was looking for:) I'll do some digging around there:):D

A couple of years ago there was a fellow who always had his detector on vacation. He was in the middle east in the desert and the detector started to react .It was a full sized bronze statue of the emperor Hadrian !!!
