I bought a package of files that said that they where for use on metal. Before I had files that I had gotten from the toll and die shop I worked in and they worked great. Now where are some places to buy good files at because the one I have suck. Thanks

I get all my files from MSC industrial supply but a Nickleson file from your local hardware store is a good file. Stay away from the cheap imports.

I think they where the cheap import ones it came with I think 12 files for $9.00. I'll have to look for the Nickleson at Home depot or the Rual king by me or just order some from MSC.

Find a cabinet shop, or other business that works with formica. They use files to finish edges, and when they get the slightest bit dull for what they are used for, they are generally discarded. These are like new when used on metal, and very often Nicholsons or other high quality. I got over a hundred from a local ambulance building company. Ask about drill bits also, I was given a sack full, and most were in perfect condition.

I just bought one of the 10" Magicut files and I'm really happy with it. It cuts fast and leaves a good finish. I picked it up at Highland Hardware. I think Sears carries them also.

WHat pattern is best to get? What type of cut should I go for also?

That depends on what exactly you plan on doing. For general use a double cut bastard mill or flat file in 8-12". A single cut file will leave a better finish but not cut as fast. I've never tried a "magicut" so can't say anything on those. If you want a better finish then go with a second cut.
