anyone know were i can buy some thin metal rods to make homemade throwing im looking for something about as thick as a metal clothes hanger
any ideas?

You could try coat hangers.

Or you could get something stronger and get 9" metal skewers from your local grocery store.

Dunno about coat hanger gauge wire, but skewers will stick very well in a variety of targets. Super easy to throw; however, if longer skewers are used, they tend bend on impact very easily, resulting in a curvy boomerang shape that's bad for followup throwing.

On youtube there is a guy called ChosonNinja. He has all kinds of stuff about makeing your own throwers, but you kind of have to sort through a lot of his other vids to get to them. He uses stuff from hardwere stores. Look him up.

Any big-box hardware store will have a variety of large spikes which make excellent bo-shuriken.
These range from nails 5-6" long and 3/16" in diameter all the way up to the really big ones used for landscape timbers.
They're as much as a foot long and made of 3/8" material.

You can cut the heads off and grind better points with any sort of grinder.

I run a used goods store and my favorite pastime is throwing stuff. Over the years (and much practice) I have come to the realization that you can throw, with success, pretty much anything somewhat pointy and hard. Like Watchful said, skewers work well. So does virtually any kitchen knife, scissors(tricky), pens, forks, screwdrivers, nails, dart heads, fondue forks, and my personal all-time favorite, that had me laughing so hard I almost peed myself, a Barbie doll with 'sharpened' legs... I was inspired that day.

All silliness aside, some better and heavier full tang kitchen knives work well as throwers with the handles removed and balanced with a little creative drilling. To answer the question, I agree with mwerner, grind/file nails or spikes purchased at a hardware store. They are cheap, easy to work with once annealed, and durable once hardened.

Befriend your local second hand store. You will be amazed at what they can supply you with.

I use .25 or .50 O1 square rod you can find it on many online stores or that really big online auction site.
