There is no such thing as "good enough", either your work is good or it is not. How is your work?

call South Bend Lathe in South Bend Indiana (I think thats the right state...where Notre Dame is) and order the book "How to Run a Lathe" its cheap and REALLY good.

In addition to the books, I would get some soft material like brass or aluminum and practice practice practice

Start off with a good set of dial calipers and try hit some predetermined diameters.
Try to set up tooling with a quick change tool post so you never have to move your compound. I try to set 2 turning tools, chamfter tool, radius tools, boring bar and cut off tool all working off the two positions of the quick change block. This will minimize your time and allow you to do almost everthing with one set up. Extra tool holders are not cheap but will pay for themselves over time.
For making folder screws, I DO NOT use the lathe for cutting threads!! I make die holders that fit over the tail stock quill. You can make them with the lath, I used brass. I made one for the 4 sizes I use for my screws and never have to change anything. I just turn the diameter of the screw, chamfer a lead for the threads and run my die over it.
