I know I know...Cold Steel AND Nutn' in the same thread. Honestly I don't really mind either of them but that's not what this thread is about and let's keep it that way please.

This Cold Steel Warhead not only looks practical in a survival situation, it looks like A LOT of fun! And for its price, it's hard to beat! It's discontinued now, unfortunately. Anyone here have one? I would love to see some pictures, or, better yet, videos of you using it!

Also, since the Warhead is discontinued, what are your thoughts on using Cold Steel's throwers and fighters (like the Shanghai Shadow or the Pro balance thrower) as a substitute?

I think the CS Bushman would be your best choice for "knife on a stick". Though you can pretty much take any blade and make it into a spear if you want.

Thick sturdy knives will obviously take more abuse, so yeah the Pro Balance Throwers would work. I have a few of them, and if you plan to get one I would recomend the bowie shaped thrower, as it is more like a real knife with an edge that can actually do some knife chores, unlike the spear shaped thrower.

One nice feature of those throwers is that you can remove the handle scales with any flat head screwdriver, or improvise with any simple coin. Keep in mind that these are big heavy knives, so lashed to a stick, they would likely make a better thrusting weapon than a throwing one. IMHO. :)

God#@$ that guys voice annoys me. He needs a girlfriend.

sorry couldnt help myself

anyways i dont quite get why you would want a knife on a stick seems like a great way to lose/break your knife. why not get something like this: http://www.eseeknives.com/arrowhead.htm

assuming you dont have to survive for an extended period of time just throw something like this in your pocket: http://www.eseeknives.com/Mini-Survival-Kit.htm with the izula and go. In additin to your favorite woods knife if your like me and want a big knife.

What survival situation is the cold steel warhead ideal for?

I agree that the Bushman is really more of the way to go. Just tuck a few finish nails under the plastic end of the sheath so you have something to affix it to a shaft with. Without a nail the head will loosen the second you smack anything with it and you'll be walking around trying to find your knife. :p

+1 on this.

That's the nice thing about that little plastic plate on the backside, and the pouch on the front of the sheath. Great places to stash stuff. :)

I was reading this and about to post something about "what do you really think you'll need that big of a spear for anyhow"? Yea, something smaller is all you would probably ever need for a spear, but the utility of the bigger blade for chopping and such is what the bushman would really be needed for, the practicality of a spear that big would not be much. How about a Bushman with a Esse Arrowhead tucked into the pouch on the sheath? You have it covered then in the same sized package.

IMO the Warhead is more for fun than actual use.
I own a TF Thrower , Shanghai Shadow and a Bushman ! The Bushman is easy to put on the end of a stick , by the way guys , if you carve your stick to a minor point the handle fits on there nice and tight. I've thrown mine at God knows what for over a year and it still has not come off on it's own.
The TF Thrower is as sturdy as anything twenty times the price and that is it's problem , it is really only good for throwing as the edge is ridiculously obtuse.

The Shanghai Shadow is pretty neat , mine came very sharp but after having it for about a year the only thing I have done is strip off the coating and blue it. It's not the most utilitarian of designs but it would work as a spear if need be.

I thought about getting a Warhead but the last thing I need right now is another knife I will most likely never use.

I also have an ESEE arrowhead , to me that's the sort of thing you stick in your bug out bag and forget about until you need it. It is more for fish spearing or frog gigging , while the Cold steel products aside from the very useful Bushman ( while being a great value for what you pay ) arent really that practical.

Although ! If I were stuck in some creepy bush with rusty critters about I would love to have a Warhead on the end of a sturdy shaft for a sense of security. The Warhead on a good shaft would dissuade most two legged critters from messing with you :)

Poking stuff, no you don't need a pin. Cutting stuff, though, you sure as hell do! If you ever want to take your Bushman off of that stick, just bang it against a tree a couple of time and it'll fly right off. ;)
