I heard today the price of metal is on the increase. The nickle now cost more to make (8 cents) then it's worth. And it's illegal to melt it down.....We can burn the FLAG just not the money, only in America. Just thought I would see everyones opions and warn them not to be melting down there lose change to make your knives. :) :) :)

Interesting concept...
Has anyone ever tried to make some Damascus steel with real coins in the billet?

It would likely compromise the integrity of the blade. You CAN make a kind of "ghetto mokume" with quarters. I have known folks to pound down a nickel and use it as a handle spacer though.

Also, FWIW I believe it's not illegal to deface currency, it's only illegal to deface it and try to use it as currency afterwards.

As deker said, I to have seen mokume made with a stack of quarters but i wouldn't add coins to my damascus.

The cost of nickel has gone through the roof lately, it has doubled in the last couple years. Steel is on the rise also, it's all going up.

Alan, YES .One of our members has done it and posted pictures here !!...Ariel Salaverria, a South American with amazing talents ,do a search.

I didn't realize that Ariel had used coins. I had seen the cut up pieces of cymbals to add a little bit of brass to the surface, but missed the coins....I gotta go back and find that. Thanks!

Guys,
Since I use ALOT of nickel, this affects me greatly. I just went full time so its even more important, however y'all need to calm down. Steel cycles every few years and nickel does too, although the cycles are longer and less volitile. :jerkit: Watching metal futures to see when to buy will drive you batty. Tighten the belt and shut up. Find a reliable source and stick with it. I just started with Kelly Cupples and I think I'll continue.

On CNN today the government announced that it is now illegal to melt coinage. 5 years and 10.000 bucks if caught.

Yep!!! On CNN they also said that a penny and a nickel is worth more money as scrap than face value.

Delbert, you need to check Vista Metals for nickel.

I just sold a bunch of nickel on these forums at close to 1/2 to going rate, I probably should have kept it.

1984 was the last year for copper pennies, I remember my high school chemistry class making brass covered pennies out of copper ones, we had to dig up pennies from 1984 or earlier, or they would melt in the process. I still have them :)

When my dad passed away, I was given a small box with all of the things my dad had in his pockets at the time of his death.

I still have that box. One of the things was about a $1 in change.
Now I have always been thinking of anyway to put or forge the coins into a knife blade?
