hey mete u seem to know more then i will ever in 2 lifetimes know about metal. So, i ask im following a heated debate on a hunting site concerning arrow broadheads. why i ask is one is a made of powedered metal and is a 1 piece head. the guy is touting magnesium in the powder mix as making it a better product. I dont know the exact mix of the powders, but what would magnesium do for a broadhead as far as edge retention and impact strength on say direct shoulder bone hits? mainly wanting to know what magnesium does mostly. i know from u ill get a non bullshit answer instead of a sales pitch. thanks
 
That brings to mind a number of things !! I wouldn't use powder metal as it has an inherent brittleness unless you were talking about a maximum density double press ,double sinter type. You don't want any brittleness in case you hit bone . The only use of magnesium in a steel powder is the use of magnesium stearate [stearate is the chemical name for soap ] in very small amounts as a lubricant to make the powder flow in the die better.They use the same magnesium stearate for the same reason in making tablets of medicines and vitamins !! Does the maker have a website ? I'd like to check it out .I'm not a bowhunter so I don't know what's available as far as materials or manufacturing methods.
 
The G5 website mentions MIM manufacturing which is not the same as powder metals .But the site mentions "Mag Tough" but looking through the list of broadheads I only see "Steel Tough" , so where's the "Mag Tough " ???
 
thats why im asking u lol, i dont use those heads anyways they have what many claim to be soft, and can get roll over on tip on direct bone hits.
 
I looked through the site too, and like Mete didn't find any products that listed "mag tough" even though it is in their "behind the design" page :confused:
My guess is that their line of replaceable blade broadheads has a magnesium alloy body instead of aluminum or steel. The muzzys I have are aluminum body with ss blades and a steel tip. They're probably trying to come up with something stronger than aluminum and lighter than steel.
