Hey Everybody, I need some help idenifing some Metal I got from a buddy at work. It looks like some type of cutting blade about 7 1/2"
x 1 1/8" x 5/32". On one side it has Made in Germany and the other side has "W 174 KB 01". Can anyone tell me what type of metal this is? Will it made a good blade? How can it be annealed and heat treated? Thanks for any help you can give, It looks like I can get more if it's worth it.

don't know what it is exactly, but will it make a good knife?
that's the interesting question, probobly,

let me ask you a question, what was it used for?

that will tell you alot about it.

why is it being discarded? (we got some steel in the shop awhile back that would not hold an edge. we sent one piece back and threw the rest away. I didn't salvage it.)

is it easy or hard to grind?
what kind of sparks does it give off when you grind.?
If you heat a corner with a torch can you flatten it?

Eric, The only info I have on the metal is that it was used in a paper shear, it has a edge like scissors. The reason there being discarded is unknown, I have not tryed grinding or anything however
it appears to have carbon in it by some rust around the area were it was bolted down.

OK, it's not a high speed cutter, so probobly not high speed steel.

It rusts, so it's not stainless.

It's probobly some form of high carbon steel,

from your discription it only rusted a little, it's probobly got some crome in it.

it's probobly o-1 with some crome added(just a wild guess)

if you do stock reduction, check it and see if you can live with the hardness.

if you forge, test heat a small corner and see if it's "hot hard" (if you heat it red hot and it's still hard, it's "hot hard" and not forgeable but stock reduction still makes a good blade)

If you forge it or are not happy with the hardness then you have to re treat, and with an unknown, there will be some guess work but it's no worse than heat treating demascus.

I hope this helps, Eric
