Metal Removal

Well, I did some reprofiling on my BM 943 over the weekend, and for some reason, it seems to me that the blade has gotten just a little smaller, maybe 1-2mm. How quickly does sharpening a blade remove metal? Should I really be noticing such things, or is it just psychological?

Measuring the blade says it's 3 3/8" (3.375), but I'm not sure where it was before I started, so I'm clueless.

If you are using power tools, grinder or power sander, you could easily remove 1-2 mm. If you are using high honing pressure and an extremely coarse bench stone or a diamond hone you might take off that much material, but it would be hard with 60 RC 154CM alloy.

One way to tell is by how big a burr you raised when you did your honing. The Burr is typically as tall as the depth of the edge you removed with your first pass. If you raised a large burr on one side then raised a large burr on the other side you removed a lot of material and you might see the change in blade contours.
