Metal sheaths?

I think I got it figured out on the forming, at least. I didn't have any nickle silver, so I used some brass .032 shim stock and formed around a hard wood blank after annealing it.

The problem came when I went to silver braze the sheath together. I kept burning holes in the sheath. The silver solder I bought at Lowes seems to melt at about the same temp as nickle silver and brass.

Do you use a lower heat silver braze, or just silver solder? I also saw some copper alloy braze at Lowes and tried some of it. It melted at a lower temp than the brass and was a silver color, will this work?

I know most use .040 nickel silver instead of brass, but this was for a keeper and for practice.

Thanks,

Will,I have ben doing my metal sheaths from as thin as .025 stock and haven't had any trouble with the braze,The stuff I have melts a little hotter than what you get from the jewelery supply (which is better)I always want to grind through the tips. You may b using to hot of a flame with your torch,Depending on what thickness of things I am brazing I will usually just use the plumbers propane torch on ferrules and sheaths so I don't over heat them.
I started with Brass for the sheaths and still like making them,I plan on setting up a plating system so I can use the brass as a base metal for the sheaths and ferrules and possiably the guardsas i have sheets upom sheets of it around the shop if you noticed when you were up here..If you would like, after Christmas come up for a wekend and we can work on the metal sheaths and see if we can figure out your problem,I will show you how to do the throat and tips for the sheaths also.
I am planning on doing a Metal sheath tutorial after the holidays when I have some time to settle down and take the pictures,I have three to get done now.
