metal wedge in a maul

I am restoring a couple of mauls for the first time and have a question about the wedge. I normally don't use a metal wedge in axes but should I put one in for a maul? I'm curious if the heavier head & pounding needs extra reinforcement in the wedge.

Thanks for any feedback.

Mryncy , the way I did it when I had my tool store was to drive a full size wood wedge I first and then trim it flush with the head ( hack saw ) then off set the metal wedge in the center . A light twist in the metal wedge . Drive I in as far as it will go without doing damage sand off flush if needed . Wedge size depends on if you have a sledge eye (round ) , medium metal wedge or if you have a maul eye ( oblong ) use a large metal wedge . Wild Bil

I've always been of the opinion that a metal wedge is installed only when a handle becomes loose. If you think about this; a metal wedge is a lot faster/easier than disassembly in order to replace a wood wedge, or naively thinking you can pound in another woodie beside the first one. There are no metal wedges in the axes and sledges I use and most of them were re-hafted about 20 years ago.
