Do you metallurgists have a source where I can find theTime-temperture and transformation charts for different steels. I been searching the web with no luck, I guess I don't know exactly how to word what I'm looking for.

Thank you,

Bill

The authoritative source for such information would be the American Society for Metals, now ASM International, and its Handbook.

The site is asminternational.org. If you join for about $100 you get online access to a lot of stuff, maybe not all though. There is also a division of ASM called the heat treating society.

You might be able to acquire a Metals Handbook (you would only need/want the volumes dealing with certain steels, there are a dozen or so volumes) online.

Good luck.

I would think any serious bladesmith could benefit from membership in ASM.

Hi there, Bill Buxton. :D

Go here and click on whatever steel you want and download the TTT charts.

Crucuble Steel data charts

One of the ASM books would have it .I'm no longer a member ,being retired , so I don't have it though I do have some especially tool steels . Did you want all or just specific ones ?

Thanks everyone,

I would like to have a reference for several of the knife steels so I can compare, but if I can only get a few it would be nice to have 1080,1095,0-1 and especially 52100.

Thanks again,

Bill

Sent you a few. I wonder if Crucible would supply TTT curves at leas of the ones they make.

Your mean like this ? I found this page with HEAPS of various steels and their properties: http://www.sz-metal.si/selector/steels/3.html

There are 6 or 7 pages of that stuff, just edit the link and put [1 .. 7] in place of that 3 )http://www.sz-metal.si/selector/steels/1.html for example). They list most decent knifemaking steels (and many more not used in knifemaking).

it's easyer to start here and pick the steels you want..
http://www.sz-metal.si/en/ :)

not many that we use though..

I was deliberating whether to post that URL too or not but ultimately decided against it. If you take a look at the page I mentioned you'll notice that one single page (#3 for example) contains more information for various steels than all subpages under Products menu do combined (or so it seems, haven't actually counted them all but I did notice some knifemaking steels in the pages I mentioned that didn't come up among "Products").

I found that page when I was looking for relevant O1 information; they've got multiple O series steels listed as well as A, D, L, M, H and W series, 52100 and stainless 440 (B and C I believe) of those that I've seen mentioned as a suitable knifemaking materials, plus many more - some totally unsuitable for knives, some very high attainable hardness HSS that look great in theory but probably wouldn't work out I presume since I've never seen them used in any knife before), such as T series and so on.

Anyway, what I wanted to say was that if you do use their website I suggest you look the steels up via pages I mentioned rather than the very stingy Products page beause you'llsee more stuff listed there :)
