I'm watching the only movie I know of about a metallurgist ."No Highway in the Sky " 1951 with Jimmy Stewart as the metallurgist. It's all about fatigue failure. The first book about fatigue failure was written by the US Navy as a result of aircraft failures .I have a copy.Fatigue failures of course are much better understood now.Don't make sharp corners !!

I remember that movie. He runs around yelling that the wings will fall off at a certain time. They think he is nuts.....until the wings start falling off.

Great Movie.

Mete, Is the book you're referring to titled " Prevention of Failure of Metals Under Repeated Stress" by the Battelle Memorial Institute, 1941?
Good book. Like you said, it's all about no sharp corners and proper polishing so that no stress "raisers" (risers) will form.

The book I have is a navy book but it's up in the attic so I can't tell you the title.

BTW I always thought the movie was made as a result of the British Comet jet crashes .But I was wrong .The movie was made in 1951 but the first Comet flight was in 1952 !!! They should have watched the movie !!
