My lovely wife wants to add some reference works to my library! :D I have been spending some time at the ASM site, but I am not sure which book(s) are the correct ones. Funds are limited so I want to make the best use of them for the current purchases.

The ASM book on quenchants and quenching technology has been on my list for some time. Is this the correct book? The title is: "Handbook of Quenchants and Quenching Technology".

Secondly, I am looking for the best heat treating reference work that will have good practical application for my shop. It must have appropriate alloy information, heat treating specifications for said alloys and all of the necessary TTT curves and graphs. Again, is this the right book? The title of this one is: "Heat Treater's Guide: Practices and Procedures for Irons and Steels, 2nd Edition".

Thanks a heap, guys.

Both look like excellent books that would serve you well. The price on the heat treaters guide is actually a pretty good one. It couldn't hurt to do a search on abebooks.com to see if there are some used copies out there for even less. I only have one or two books on my shelf that I bought new, the rest I obtained fairly cheap.

Thanks, Kevin. I have no intention of purchasing new if I can avoid it, I just wanted to make sure I was getting the right books. It is hard to decipher some of the selections on the ASM site.

Does the "Heat Treaters Guide" cover 52100? I'd love to have that book! Big $$$ though, however, lots of valuable info. (then again, what would that book have in it, that Mete or Kevin wouldn't know?)

Amazon is hooked up with Alibris, Bookfinder, and I think Powels. I got quite a few books from Alibris(sp) as they seemed to cover the steel belt. Much of the information has not changed in 50 years so some of the older additions are fine. The Making Shaping Steel book from US Steel is a very good reference. It can be found for reasonable prices used, much less than the $1200 new.

Ed, thanks for the leads. Unfortunately, all of the sources I found, including Amazon, Bookfinder and Alibris, were more expensive for used books than the ASM wants for the new ones. Color me:  I was shocked.

Robert, unfortunately, mete and Kevin are not at my beck and call as much as I would like! :D
