Meteorite inlay?

Hello!

I hope you are all doing well today! I am in the process of putting together my first Olamic Cutlery Busker and I'm trying to decide on what type of inlay to do. Right now my top choices are either meteorite or black Timascus. I'm leaning towards the meteorite because I just think that sounds awesome.

Before I decide, I was hoping to get some feedback from someone who has had experience with meteorite inlays from Olamic... Or any knife that features meteorite in the construction.

My fear is that I will have rust issues considering most meteorites are composed mainly of iron.

Do you have pictures of the meteor inlay? I agree that it sounds cool but I couldn't find any shots of it. The Mokume sure looked good.

I guess my only though on Meteor is that it's a natural material so what will your example look like. I don't know if I'd worry too much about rust. That looks like a pretty fancy knife vs. one getting packed around and sweated on.

Meteorite looks great, in my opinion, but rust is definitely a concern. Renaud Aubry offers a meteorite handle option (http://www.artisancoutelier.com/en/mineral/226-meteorite.html). I e-mailed them to ask about rust and they said I would definitely have to keep it oiled or waxed; they also mentioned that it is quite heavy. Perceval also has some meteorite offerings. One of them is €35,000! https://www.perceval-knives.co.uk/56-meteorites-knives.html

That's kind of what I was thinking... I live less than a mile from the beach in Washington state, so I'd hate to end up with rust if I forget to oil the inlay for a bit. Still leaning towards the meteorite I think though, lol.

I do not. The majority of the samples of meteorite used in knives and rings has looked very similar though. I have messaged Olamic about the rust and what the sample would look like, but I'm not expecting to hear back from them for a while with the great toilet paper apocalypse going on. The Mokume was another inlay that was up there with the black Timascus and meteorite I was looking at. The copper looks pretty phenomenal and I'm a big fan of patinas.

Olamic Cutlery got back to me, seems their still fully operational. :)

Apparently they had some issues working with meteorite (chipping/cracking) so they are no longer offering it at this time. Kind of a bummer, but I was still able to put together what should be a great looking knife.

I'd given some thought the the Whippersnapper because I love wharncliffe blades, but the Busker with a Largo blade has been one of my grail knives since the moment I laid eyes on it.

I ended up going with a Busker with a Largo blade, light blast handle, Timascus inlay, and a blue clip, backspacer and hardware. Pretty classic Busker.

The best part is that I had originally planned on going with M390... But Olamic Cutlery is all out of M390 Largo blades until June/July so they cut me a great deal on a Damasteel blade.

Should be done this next week. :D

Ilya of Olamic just sent me these pics. :D

I have a real meteorite I bought on impulse.

It has rust, but not as bad as one would think. Its not like solid rust

Maybe mines fake, but I dont think so

Screw it why not
