I am thinking of having Gibeon or Cape York meteorite used for the fittings (guard, ferrule and buttcap) on a bowie. Is this a good idea?

Why not ? I was tempted to buy a folder with a Gibeon bolster ,it really looked nice . As a decorative addition it's similar to damascus. We metallurgists call it Widmanstatten lines, which is caused by precipitation along certain crystallographic planes Please make one with meteorite and post the photo.

Geeze, you guys must have been reading my mind!!!I just bought this meteorite. Going to have it sliced up, for bolster stock and to make some Meteorite Damascus out of it....:D :D :D
This is a Campo del Cielo, Fell in Argentina about 5000 years ago, a courser grain meteorite than Gibeon Meteorite...should be interesting!!!! :D :D :D

Indian George,
Can't be from a Donkey or a Llama....cause I step on it an nearly broke my foot!! :D :D

George,
Yes, I knew the pattern would be lost, but I have used some of Delbert Ealy's meteorite damascus in the past and like it very much....I want to make a folder with this meteorite as the bolsters and forge some into damascus for the blade....

Oh ya...this is a 5 pound piece of damascus, about the size of a big fist.....in case anyone wants to know.

If you forge it you are wasting it. Meteorites are usually iron-nickel alloys with ~10-20 % nickel. Use something else for damascus. Indian george may be on to something. I recently came across a list of materials for knife handles including on e called Copralite. It was identified as petrified dinosaur do-do.

SOmeone posted link to some of that stuff before in general disucssion forum. a lot of it had crystals in interorior, like agate. purty. But still crap. :)

Mete,
This particular meteorite has 6.68% nickel. I plan to use whatever scraps that are leftover after slicing up the meteorite for the damascus....

Oh come on Rhino. There's gotta be a market for a line of Do-Do kitchen knives somewhere.

Kit, I've seen that knife before. What kind of etch did you do to get the Widmanstatten (thanks mete) pattern to look so bold?

A year or so ago I bought some fossil whales teeth. I think Bruce Evans bought one too. I cut it and it was like being in a Georgia Mens room in Augest. The worst smell you can Imagine. It never got any better so I got rid of it!

Hope the petrified dinosaur do-do smells better:eek:

I got some of that stuff from a fella in West Texas. It wasn't magnetic. I guess it wasn't quite petrified yet...
