I am in the middle of trading for some meteorite. I plan on putting it into a canister and welding it up. The problem that the pieces are large and will not fit into a 2" canister. He also stated that it can not cut it with a bandsaw. When he put it into the forge pieces just shatters off of them so it can not be annealed. I was planning to anneal it in GrassHoppa's electric oven. If it does blow apart in the oven I'll just put them it the canister.
Any suggestions???

I dont see why you couldn't use a bandsaw. If nothing else, find someone who has a bricksaw and a diamond blade.

Meteorite by itself doesn't do well as a knife steel. I saw an article somewhere that used meteorite shavings with a carbon steel in a canister weld, though.

Do you want to use metoerite so the tools you make will meteor standard?

What are you paying per pound ? I,ve heard prices for meteorite are out of this world ! Astronomical ! L:O:L

Is it all metalic? I don't know jack 'bout metoerite, but I've heard Bill Moran tried welding it up to 2000 layers and was still having problems with impurities. Something to do with the nickle content. I've seen an article in Blade where they did a canister/sanmai, put lathe turnings in with 1084 powder and it had a high carbon steel core for the cutting edge. Turn out a very interesting pattern. I can't remember what issue, you might check there site for past articles for help.

I remember seeing a meteorite or partial meteorite bolster on a knife right here at BladeForums earlier this year.

I hoping to make a Bowie out of it. I am swapping for some of my Damascus and part of one of the billets I make out of them. It's 2.5# I am swapping for.:D

Delbert Ealy does it all the time, and I'm in the middle of it. The main difference is that we buy the shavings from the guys that bandsaw them up into slabs. I have 20 lbs of what I call "Star Dust" right now. Runs about $20.00 per pound, and yes, it's full of all kinds of stuff. The percentage of failure is high. That being said, I know that our esteemed I.G. will persevere and be sucsessful as always!!!

George,
I saw Brian Little forge a billet from a rock of this stuff years ago.
You may want to try to give him a call for a few tips also.
He is a real gent!

IG,if it isn't a fairly pure iron or iron/nickel metorite,it will not work .If it crumbles or breaks under the hammer,it is probably too stony. - Stacy

IG,
Iv'e made a bunch of meteorite damascus. Enough to know how to make it sucessfully even with low layer counts. It is the MOST difficult thing I have done in the realm of damascus, but it is possible. There are a considerable number of tricks to making sucessful damascus out of meteorite without alot of waste. I'd be happy to breif you. Send me your number, I seem to have misplaced it since the last time we talked. Most metallic meteorites only have very small quantities of impurities. Don't bother trying to anneal it:thumbdn: , it is already as soft as its going to get.:D And yes I hve cut up several with my bandsaw. The main reason meteorite doesn't do well by itself is because it contains no carbon.

I bet if you soaked it in your world famous ht relish it would burn all the impurities out and you could cut it with a butter knife.

Ig, use as bolster or handle material. its the best way to get your money out of it. You can see the pattern. forgeing it seems to be a waste of meteriorite. it never fails to have a bad spot right in the damn middle of the blade.

This is the plan outside canister 2" inside canister 1" filled with meteorite pieces and 1084 powder, out compartment just 1084/4600.
Del: Email sent.
Thanks Guys

From what I hear, that Universal Relish of IG's is made from meteorite tail to begin with!:D

The problem with my relish is if I do not watch that close I'll have nothing left. HEHEHEHE!!!!
Thanks for the call Delbert.
