I went to a Metis culture day and had a lot of fun, had a buffalo burger and bought a nice hawk, threw a really old knife, hawk and a spear.

These boys talked about throwing contests with hawk or knife. The target is a playing card on a log end. No measured line. Cost to play is a dollar a throw. Winner is the guy who cuts a piece off the card.

The log was one log one another, much lower than I'm used to aim and I predictably threw where I practice and went high - way high.

Now I want to go back next year and take these guys on, too many 'white man' jokes for me!

But I'd really like to know how many throws an average game takes before a winner cuts a piece off the card. If we're talking hundreds, I may practice more before I get involved, :) :D, but if its lower, one year should get me ready.

has anybody played this game before?

This type of game is a standard in the reenactment hobby.

Cutting off a piece of the card is pure luck. Those that can manage to hit the card more often than others will have slightly better luck. If you are going to practice for this type of game then just practice to hit the card, luck will do the rest.

A dollar a throw is pretty steep. I would be wary of hosts of the side show setting up unwary individuals and then bringing in a ringer intending to pocket the cash.
